Editorial Reviews

Deluxe two CD edition including a bonus CD that contains six additional tracks. Digitally remastered edition of the British Pomp Rock band's 1975 album. A Night At The Opera, named after the Marx Bros film, is widely acclaimed as one of the greatest albums of all time. Exceptional on every level, musically, lyrically and artistically, Queen took the strongest elements of their previous two albums to make the ultimate winning combination. The most expensive album ever recorded at that time, it delivered Rock, Opera, Heavy Metal, romance, ballads, Pop, sci-fi Folk, music hall, Trad Jazz and even the National Anthem. The album contains perhaps the most famous Rock song of all time, 'Bohemian Rhapsody', which went on to spend 14 weeks at #1. Queen also recorded the first official Pop promo for 'Bohemian Rhapsody' as they were on tour and could not appear on Top of The Pops and this video paved the way for MTV and VH1.

Queen's fourth album A Night at the Opera was originally released in December of 1975.
The album was the band's sink or swim album, if it flopped it would have been the end of Queen.
Here is a track-by-track summary of the album.
"Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to...)" kicks off the album in a hard rocking manner which was frontman Freddie Mercury's ode to an ex-management company whom treated the band like dirt. The vaudevillian sounding "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" follows and is great with its 1930s-ish sound and harmonized heavy metal guitar solo at the end is amazing. Drummer Roger Taylor's ode to the automobile "I'm In Love With My Car" follows and is a superb rocker sung by Roger. The ballad "You're My Best Friend" follows and is a nice song written by bass player John Deacon for his wife Veronica (whom he is still married to today) and was a US Top 20 hit in the summer of 1976 peaking at #16. I love the melodies and harmony parts. Guitarist Brian May's "'39" is a great skiffle (folk) song with Brian singing. The song is Queen's sci-fi song about a man who goes time travelling for a hundred years but comes back one year older. Musically sounds like an outtake from either The Beatles' Rubber Soul or a Kingston Trio album. Brian writes the next track, the rocker "Sweet Lady" which is a great hard rock track. Freddie's vaudevillian sounding "Seaside Rendezvous" ends the first half. Got to love those voice orchestrations from Roger and Freddie imitating a brass and horn section.
Brian's epic "The Prophet's Song" kicks off the second half in epic style and all I can say is WOW! The song was written while Brian was sick with the curable form of hepatitis and an ulcer which forced Queen to cancel a US tour in 1974. It's a great epic, superb vocals.

I've heard previous releases of this album more times than I would even want to count, and this record was already 4 years old when I was born! Accordingly, I'll leave the track-by-track recounting of the wonders of this classic record to the professional writers, and suffice to say that this is a classic record for a very good reason. Queen were already breaking stylistic molds with previous releases, but this one amazed everyone with not just the scope of the songs, the diversity of musical styles and themes, and the flawless execution of EVERYTHING, but with the cohesiveness of the record as a whole.

This 2-disc set includes the entire original record, remastered (yes "again", but better - more on this in a bit) and a second disc of alternate versions of some of the album's songs plus "Keep Yourself Alive", also remastered. Since there are really only two kinds of people considering a purchase of this album, and one group (those who haven't heard it) will presumably buy this version anyway since it's the latest "official" version, I'll address "the question" that I assume the other group (the ones who have heard, and possibly still own, a previous copy) is asking: "Why should I buy this new version?" I'll be honest, it's not the 2nd disc of bonus tracks. They're cool, but even for dorks like myself they're not really essential. If you REALLY REALLY REALLY love Queen, there's a good chance you already have bootlegs of them already.

The real answer is, this re-master absolutely rocks. By which I mean, it's carefully and diligently enhanced the clarity and detail of the original recordings well beyond the capabilities of technology used on - and for the reproduction of - previous releases.

This remastered edition, together with the DVD are a great tribute to this immortal classic album, which first hit the world in 1975.

An amazing classic of the 20th century.

Everyone knows the multi-layered classic rock-opera Bohemian Rhapsody, voted over and over the number one hit of all time.

I think The Prophets Song ' is just as powerful.Queen guitarist. Brian May wrote this after he had a dream about the Great Flood. Many religions and cultures have stories of floods, including the Great Flood of The Bible that led to Noah's Ark.But most (not all) music stars today lack imagination.)

Both Bohemian Rhapsody and The Prophets Song change pace and mood several times at just the right places making for a magnificent overall masterpiece.

The angry hard rocker 'Death on Two Legs' was dedicated to a former manager of the band. It is fantastic. I enjoyed the nonchalant and whimsical 'Seaside Rendezvous' and the camp 'Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon'.
I think '39'is a lovely story (it's about a man who go's into space for many years and does not age , but when he returns , his daughter , or granddaughter , is now an old lady). It shows why Brian May is recognized as one of the greatest guitarists of all times. Also poignant and beautiful is the reflective

'Good Company' about a man's cycle of life from infancy to old age.

.The operatic 'Love of My Life' -is a classic rock opera piece and was redone in 1979.
And the hard-rock Sweet Lady is great song about the two sides of a strained love relationship !

The DVD complements the album in every way. All the clips here are rivetting to see.
