This is the fifth book I have read by Ryan Kirk in the Nightblade world. They have all been excellently written and very good reads. The characters are relatable and this current series, to me is a reflection of our current state of affairs. A once great kingdom in divided by the ruling houses and those that were once responsible for maintaining and securing that kingdom are now being demonized.
Kirk has created a fantasy series that does not rely on high magic or fantastical creatures to capture the reader's interest. Instead he has created characters that everyone can see a bit of themselves in. They are not certain of every step they take, they make mistakes and then have to move on through their lives. His characters have emotions and relationships and Kirk deals with those in a very reasonable manner. The character's troubles serve to enhance the story and not drag it down. Their growth follows the story in a very enjoyable manner. I highly recommend this book and the others set in the world of the Nightblades.
