I liked Nightblade’s Vengeance, and especially the character of Kiyoshi, a dayblade. If you have read Ryan’s first three great book series featuring the development of the Nightblade Ryuu, you will recognize a dayblade as a healer able to heal with great power. I liked how well Ryan developed Kiyoshi’s character, and the story lines setting which is before his previous three novels. But, unlike Kiyoshi it wasn’t until chapter 16 that I could fully empathize with Asa. I wish chapter 16 would have been incorporated earlier in the book, leading to a fuller understanding of how Asa’s childhood effected her present. Overall I thought it a good book, with the added bonus of no huge use of profanity, and no gratuitous sex, which is something I always look for in reviews.

Once again, Ryan Kirk builds a world with complex characters and twisting plots. Nightblade's Vengeance was a fun prequel to the original trilogy, as it paints the backdrop to the history we glimpsed in the former series.

I thought the characters were once again well developed. Asa and Kiyoshi are particularly interesting - Asa for her single mindedness and Kiyoshi for his thoughtfulness.

I also loves how the "sense" is developed in this book. In the first trilogy, the sense seems almost all-powerful. In this book you see some of the vulnerability and limits of its power.

Overall a fun read that I highly recommend.

Ending up at the King’s court she finds herself in the middle of the political maneuverings of the dominant houses and blades, searching for truth and closure.
Nightblade’s vengeance is full of political intrigue, friendship, forgiveness and lies that are covered up by militant organizations. Written when the blades were a respected part of the kingdom and the events leading to the departure of neutrality. The book has well-rounded characters, and Asa’s growth in the book is very well defined. Masterfully written and an essential addition to the Nighblade collection!

Impressing even the blade council with her singular devotion to the cause of personal vengeance, Asa is sent out in search of a man that has been erased from blade history. Her quest takes her to the archives in the King’s court where she finds herself a pawn in the political maneuverings of powerful houses and blades. During her time digging into the past she befriends another young blade and together they begin to unravel the lies they didn’t know they’d been told. After barely escaping the capital in the midst of a coup Asa must discover the boundaries between friendship, forgiveness, and vengeance.

Nightblade’s vengeance takes us back to a time where blades are a respected members of the kingdom and follows the path of a seemingly average blade. Gone is the all-powerful attack of Ryuu and Morkio but in its place we can see the beginnings of a stronger story and a young blade destined for greatness. Kirk’s best work yet.

After the Nightblade series which I recommended to friends something I have not done for a long while, I was eagerly waiting the release of the Nighblades Vengeance, it did not disappoint. The characters developed as the book went on, and I found myself having empathy with them. My poor husband lost me for two days as I couldn’t but the book down. It is well written and the plot didn’t jump back and forth like some I have read in this genre,the story pulls you in as you are reading it, as the Nighblade series did, it kept me engrossed and quiet until the last page.
