I performed the Suite for Horn & Piano at my senior recital, & I've loved Wilder's music ever since - great melodies, interesting harmonies, fabulous rhythms. As other reviewers have noted, Thomas Bacon's tone can be a bit harsh at times, but it's acceptable given the style of music.

Highly recommended.

This album is one of my all-time favorite horn albums. Out of my collection of twenty or so horn discs, this remains one of my most listened to and sits in my cart stereo for days or weeks on end.

Bacon seems to always have the right mix of styles when playing this music. He knows when to play in the jazz style and when to play in the modern classic one. Also, the balance between the piano and horn is absolutely terrific, both playing off each other and responding to how they play. These two musicians are obviously very well "tuned in."

Out of the whole disc, my favorite has to be the third sonata. Out of all of them it has the most jazz influence. This is one of the main reasons why I like it as I am a huge jazz fan as well as classical. When classical composers handle jazz, it often sounds different than if a jazz composer would. This is very exciting as Wilder obviously is very capable with jazz and can go between elements freely.

As for the playing of Bacon, he can sometimes seem to get out of hand with a very brassy or maybe even rude sound, but I think that makes the music more exciting. This also has to do with the horn as Bacon plays a single B flat horn, not a double. Because of this, the horn breaks up sooner than a double horn.

Overall, this album comes highly recommended from a horn player and a music lover. If you don't like this album, then maybe something is wrong with you.

Some of the best idiomatic writing for the horn given brilliant life in these recordings.
Outstanding interpretation and collaboration by the performers.

It's great that this recording was made, giving us all an opportunity to hear wonderful Alec Wilder music. The horn playing is quite fine and technically excellent. The spirit of Alec Wilder is missing - more a tour de force for for Thomas Bacon. Phillip Moll's piano playing is quite inspiring and goes to the soul of the music.
