Tom Waits has many-many very-very fine albums, but let's face it: none of them exceed the innate greatness of Nighthawks At The Diner...with all its top-notch humor, jazz & jazzy wordplay & improvised beat poetry...but most of all: the sheer personality of Tom's delivery to a receptive audience...each moment of the performance is etched in authenticity, which doesn't age with familiarity...his voice becomes internalized & alive within you. The very funny intro...Eggs and Sausage (my favorite track)...hysterical & touching Better Off Without A Wife (makin' the scene with a magazine...ain't no way around it)...fantastic Warm Beer & Cold Women & very haunting Red Sovine cover [performed way better than the original] Big Joe and Phantom 309...well! Feel free to search through many other very fine Tom Waits albums, but none can exceed the undying greatness of Nighthawks.
By the way, as one who loved the original vinyl, I have no problem with the CD sound. It's just fine.

This CD was a gift for a friend. That said, I already owned a copy, and gave it to him to fill a hole in his Waits collection.

The performance is in front of a live audience. My understanding is that Waits set up a very small venue to do the performance. In essence this gives the effect of performing in a small club.

The music is very nice, as is the banter between songs. Sometimes it's difficult to tell what's banter and what's song. That's not a criticism. I found it charming.

I'll acknowledge that Tom Waits isn't for everyone. I have a very difficult time getting my wife to listen to him. She has difficulty getting past the gravelly voice. I compare him to someone like Dylan. He's a singer-songwriter of widely diverse range and style.

If you like Tom Waits, this is a great choice for your collection. If you aren't familiar with Waits, this is also a good choice. His remarkable sense of humor is on full display, as is his style that aligns him closely with people on the streets and hidden in the alleys.

When this first came out, the track that received the most airplay was Phantom 309, the country classic from Red Sovine. My favorite radio station back east played it for a sold 4 months. Then we moved, and moved back, and I hadn't heard Tom Waits version on the radio since. This is a great record! Everything clicks! Tom and the band are in fine form as he tears through the set list, giving it that aura that only he can give. If you are new to Mr. Waits, this is one of those cornerstone records you'll want to have in your collection, as it deserves repeated visits to recapture a time in history, not so long ago!

This is the first Tom Waits recording I ever heard around 1975 and I have been a devout fan ever since. I bought this CD as a Christmas present. He definitely is not a commercial artist and some of his music is an acquired tasted but I would recommend this CD for someone trying to introduce a friend to Tom Waits. Every song on here is fantastic. Since it is recorded live, he includes a lot of hilarious running commentary between songs. I have almost every album or CD he ever did but this is still my favorite. I wish I could describe his music but the best I can do is to say that his rough gravely voice exudes some elements of blues, jazz, folk all done in kind of Beat Poet context. Some of his songs are original and some are unique interpretations of old classics. The perfect CD to introduce someone to Tom Waits.

I bought this album because I hear "Better off without a Wife" on the radio, and, as a single guy, I needed an anthem. But it's NOT the best song on the album!!! After I listened to it 5 or 6 times over 3 days, "Eggs and Sausage" stuck in my head for the next four days. During those four days, my world turned into two types of people: Those that Understand, and Those that DO NOT understand. Of course, 90% of my world were in the "DO NOT UNDERSTAND" category. But that' OK, because it was me and Tom against the world. I usually shy away from live albums but this one left me wishing I was there. Buy this album.

Yes. I bought this when the vinyl LP first came out but then never replaced it with the CD when I gave up playing platters (can you still even guy quality styluses at a reasonable price?). It was good to hear this album again. Tom Waits has been a favorite of mine for a long time now. When it's been raining cats and dogs on a miserable California night, this album hits the spot like a shot of sludge coffee and chili with onions.

auf dieser live aufnahme aus den zeiten seiner noch urigen bluesphase - oder wie immer man das bezeichnen mag - gelingt ihm hier etwas besonderes. er benützt diese betrunkenen, mit verrauchter barathmosphäre geschwängerten songs um witzige texte (zb. emotional weather report) oder ebenso witzige storys davor zu erzählen. das feeling, der groove, geniale kompositionen, 100% tom waits auf höchstem niveau aber ohne den hauch von easy listening!

für mich eine seiner besten, für TW-fans sowieso ein muss!

der sound ist nicht perfekt, aber völlig akzeptabel, drei bis vier sterne dafür. zudem ist die live-athmosphäre ebenso wie die interaktion mit dem publikum perfekt eingefangen. klasse, macht spass!

Wer die Kölner Formation "The Piano has been drinking" noch kennt, wird hier ein paar tolle Songs im Original wiederfinden. Für mich war der jazzige Sound / Instrumentierung dieser Live-Aufnahmen überraschend, oft mit dem - vom Sänger eigenwillig bearbeiteten - Klavier im Vordergrund - 100% Tom Waits. Ein Muss für Fans!!
