Editorial Reviews
UK two CD set. Gunhill is a band from the ‘90s which featured John Lawton, the former lead singer of Uriah Heep. This twofer collects together the cassette/fan club only release One Over The Eight (1995) and the now out of print and virtually impossible to find second album Nightheat. Both discs feature bonus tracks with the intention of making this set the comprehensive collection of all the Gunhill studio recordings! This re-release has been prepared with the full input of John Lawton personally and has had a 2016 remaster.

My heart sunk when I saw that they had done a cover of ‘Eleanor Rigby’, as nobody has been able to match the poignancy of the original, especially having recently listened to ‘Vanilla Fudge’ who had murdered it. However, to be fair, they did a completely different up-tempo version of it, which included a great guitar break, all of which worked pretty well in spite of the basic sadness of the song.
They also included a couple of other covers – ‘Ready for Love’ (Mott the Hoople/Bad Company) and ‘When a man Loves a Woman’ (Percy Sledge), done well, but the bulk of the album is original material.
The singer ‘John Lawton’, ex ‘Lucifer’s Friend’ / ‘Uriah Heep’ etc, is in fine voice here, backed up by a very professional band who know what they are doing and greatly enhance his delivery.
If you had to categorise where they stood in the musical spectrum then it would most likely be in the area of ‘Foreigner’, ‘Journey’ and the like.
This is a very strong album, with a lot of good music on it, and it is a pity it was not better publicised at the time. Definitely one you will want to put on replay.Try it.
Track time: just under 62 ½ mins.
The second disc here came out in ’95 and is mostly covers, except for three original numbers composed by the band, which is probably why they have placed it second in the playing order in this set, as it is nowhere near as strong as the other one here.
Strangely there is a cover of ‘Eleanor Rigby’ here too, which is a bit of a puzzle as to why they did it twice.
Track time just under 54 mins.
The ’97 album probably rates five stars, but the ’95 3 ½ at best, which while it is not something you want to switch off, it is not particularly inspiring either; nor do you want to put it on replay, unlike the other one.

After Heep he re-visited Lucifer's Friend as well as a solo jaunt and collaborations with Zar and Rebel but never really made a re-show until the mid-nineties and his band Gunhill.
This double set couples together the Gunhill show of the period and is well stacked with Lawton interpretations of accepted standards.
I remember the period well and welcomed so much the re-appearance of Lawton on the rock stage.
The 'Nightheat' set is an interesting mix with a great versions of 'Eleanor Rigby' (nice interpretation) and 'When A Man Loves A Woman' together and to be (never to be ) classics like 'Wall Of silence' and 'Clearwater Highway'.
It was a great start to his comeback but the effort initially pre-ceding this at the time (cassette only) 'One Over The Eight' is the gem. Great covers throughout culminating in the awesome farewell number 'River Of Dreams'. What a track and what a finale.
John Lawton moved on into the noughties but sadly the output has been less regular but he thankfully earns a crust over their in Europe where they still have vast interest in great vocalists doing the true classic rock thing.
Oh yes and check out the versions of the Heep classics 'Sympathy' & 'Come Back To Me'
Excellent 2CD set confirming the voice of the seventies was alive and well after 2000. As an aside still going strong with the re-formed Lucifer's Friend in 2016.
