Nightmare Scenario: Inside the Trump Administration's Response to the Pandemic That Changed History Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 1,287 ratings

Instant #1 New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller

From the Washington Post journalists Yasmeen Abutaleb and Damian Paletta—the definitive account of the Trump administration’s tragic mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the chaos, incompetence, and craven politicization that has led to more than a half million American deaths and counting.

Since the day Donald Trump was elected, his critics warned that an unexpected crisis would test the former reality-television host—and they predicted that the president would prove unable to meet the moment. In 2020, that crisis came to pass, with the outcomes more devastating and consequential than anyone dared to imagine. Nightmare Scenario is the complete story of Donald Trump’s handling—and mishandling—of the COVID-19 catastrophe, during the period of January 2020 up to Election Day that year. Yasmeen Abutaleb and Damian Paletta take us deep inside the White House, from the Situation Room to the Oval Office, to show how the members of the administration launched an all-out war against the health agencies, doctors, and scientific communities, all in their futile attempts to wish away the worst global pandemic in a century.

From the initial discovery of this new coronavirus, President Trump refused to take responsibility, disputed the recommendations of his own pandemic task force, claimed the virus would “just disappear,” mocked advocates for safe-health practices, and encouraged his base and the entire GOP to ignore or rescind public health safety measures. Abutaleb and Paletta reveal the numerous times officials tried to dissuade Trump from following his worst impulses as he defied recommendations from the experts and even members of his own administration. And they show how the petty backstabbing and rivalries among cabinet members, staff, and aides created a toxic environment of blame, sycophancy, and political pressure that did profound damage to the public health institutions that Americans needed the most during this time. Even after an outbreak in the fall that swept through the White House and infected Trump himself, he remained defiant in his approach to the virus, very likely costing him his own reelection.

Based on exhaustive reporting and hundreds of hours of interviews from inside the disaster zone at all levels of authority, Nightmare Scenario is a riveting account of how the United States government failed its people as never before, a tragedy whose devastating aftershocks will linger and be felt by generations to come.

The odds that anyone who thought that Trump and his administration did a "tremendous, amazing, no one could have done better" job handing the Covid pandemic are low. Subterranean kind of low. That means almost everyone looking to read this book already has a decent idea of how badly the pandemic was mismanaged in 2020. We all remember watching, jaws hanging, as the President of the United States suggested that bleach could be used inside the human body to defeat Covid. So why do we need an entire book about it? After all, we lived it. We need to read it because it brings all the pieces together in a thorough and well-researched format. It was one thing absorbing the stories as they came out, day after day, for almost a year. Seeing the epic, tragic, and utterly avoidable mismanagement in one book is devastating and essential to grasping the totality of what happened.

The authors present an even-handed and fair examination of all the players. No one is above criticism - no, not even Dr. Fauci - and credit is given when sensible and reasonable measures were taken. I was taken by the personal portraits of many of the people at the center of action, especially those of Dr. Birx and Dr. Redfield. It was very easy to be on the sidelines thinking that they should have resigned many times instead of remaining in the Trump administration, but being immersed in their nightmare scenarios you see how this was not such an easy call.

The "villains" of this story are the purely political figures, especially Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. The extent to which they were prepared, and attempted, to insert themselves into decision making at the CDC and FDA for the sole purpose of propping up Trump's re-election prospects is horrifying. Yes, you think you know all about this, but until you read this book you do not.

It's tempting to turn away from everything we endured in 2020 because it's enough to just have lived through it. But it isn't enough. We owe it to all of those who lost their lives because our leaders were unwilling to take the steps necessary to save lives in a public health disaster to learn and remember what happened. If we don't learn these lessons, how will we cope with the next pandemic?

My only criticism of the book is a technical one. Even the most dedicated news junkie will find it difficult to keep track of so many names and government agencies. A "cast of characters" listing at the beginning of the book would be helpful.

Beyond politics, this book has important issues to consider in how the United States deals as a country in its healthcare policies, agencies, and administration. Further, and even more importantly, the authors provide a devastating inside account that helps explain how and why we got to the utterly botched Trump Administration response that propelled the USA to woefully achieve the highest Covid-19 infection and death rates in the developed nations on earth. The book also puts facts and form to the dire consequences that emanate from a crisis like that of Covid when you have the combination of an entirely incompetent and personality disordered president who is mostly surrounded by sycophants. I did not begin reading this book thinking that somehow Trump and his minions would prove worthy at any appreciable level in dealing with the Covid pandemic. After all, I watched Trump’s “inject bleach” news conference live last year. I watched and read his daily nonsense, tweets, and press conferences in which he blamed others and eviscerated science as well as the few competent government officials in his Administration, such as Anthony Fauci. And I owe Deborah Birx an apology after learning more by reading this book. And like the rest of you I had to live through the year of Covid, 2020, Trump style. I was sorely unprepared however for the stunning depth of Trump and Trump Administration incompetence, infighting, political chicanery and indifference to human welfare and human life that this book provides detailed accounting. Nightmare Scenario is a well-written, excellently sourced and tragic telling concerning what befalls a nation when someone like Donald John Trump becomes its chief executive. It’s lessons will reverberate for years, and even though everyone seems to be coming out with a “Trump book” these days, Nightmare Scenario stands out for its pedagogy.

Make no mistake about it. I am not a fan of the Trump Administration. “Nightmare Scenario,” probably better than any of the other books regarding the businessman-turned-celebrity-turned-politician was a disaster foisted upon the world’s great experiment. I hope people glean from this book the risks one takes when electing a businessman to higher office, primarily because the guy has no previous experience in politics.

Business is business. Governance is governance. Most elected officials will probably fail in commerce just as badly as Donald did as Commander-in-Chief.

LANGUAGE: On par with a Stephen King novel. So? Depends on your sensitivity to the “f-word.” There are more than a few occasions in which a speaker is quoted using the word. As for me, no problem. But, other folks may appreciate the heads-up.

BOTTOM LINE

The writing is thorough and fairly easy to pore through, even if, occasionally, a bit too ‘inside baseball,’ for some. Still, it should be used in universities to study how government’s effect CAN be altered by the head man in charge.

Also, I have this nagging feeling that the Trump radicals are gearing up for something huge. Some may attempt a Jan.6 revolt, while others may attempt a McVeigh act. Either way, “Nightmare Scenarion,” may be a useful read…
