From the Inside Flap

Harriet Zoffany awoke, flinching when she opened her eyes. She was in a room with blank, whitewashed walls, a single door, and no windows. She sat up, groaning at the throbbing in her head. A dim light illuminated the bleak space.

Chloroform, she thought. Old school, but effective.

She was lying on a low camp bed, still wearing the clothes in which she had been abducted. A plastic jug of water and a beaker stood on a low table, close at hand. She swung her legs off the bed, tried to stand, and fell back.

Give it time, she told herself. That's what you'd tell a patient.

After a couple of minutes, she stood up again and walked carefully to the door. It was not, she realized, a cell door. She was shut in a regular room, possibly in a house or an office complex. That gave her slight encouragement.

It might not particularly be secure, she thought. There could be a chance to escape.

She reached for the door handle and tried it, a matter of reflex, as she was sure it would be locked. The handle turned smoothly, and the door opened. The room beyond hers was oddly like a hotel lobby, carpeted and with wood paneling. There were seats, low tables, and two long windows on either side of the room. She suddenly became aware of a slight vibration, and she touched the wall.

Something mechanical, she thought. It must be an engine.

The revelation that she was on a boat of some kind, and in motion, sent her rushing to the window. There was nothing outside but open sea, the waves a few shades darker gray than the sky.

"Ah, good, you're awake!"

Two people in blue coveralls had entered the room via large double doors. They were a man of about thirty and a gray-haired woman in her forties. Both had the slightly stooped look of controlled humans. They were smiling at Zoffany, walking slowly forward. The woman carried a tray with cereal, toast, and a cup of tea or coffee.

"Who are you?" Zoffany demanded. "Where am I?"

"I'm Ms. Lassiter," said the woman, "and this is Mister Fordyce. We're going to be looking after you."

"You abducted me," Zoffany pointed out. "People are going to be looking for me. The Task Force, police."

Lassiter shook her head, smile unwavering.

"We're well outside British territory by now," she said. "And I wonder how much information about us your Task Force will share with foreign governments?"

"Quite a lot, I think," Zoffany said, trying to sound confident.

"Anyway," Fordyce said, "we've brought you some breakfast. You must keep your strength up."

Lassiter put the tray down on a table and stood back. Zoffany felt no desire to eat. But she reasoned that keeping her strength up did make sense. She sat down and reached for the cup, which proved to contain tea.

"I normally have coffee, first thing," she pointed out.

Lassiter shook her head again.

"Too much caffeine is not a good idea," she said.

As she sipped her tea, Zoffany tried to recall if caffeine affected Interloper metabolism. She could not remember any experiments on the compound.

But they would know, she reasoned.

She ate as much of the breakfast as she could, all the while trying to solicit information that might prove useful. She learned that the boat they were on had been bought with money Cassandra diverted from Sir Charles Lanier's vast fortune. She wondered if anyone was trying to follow that money trail and silently hoped they were.

"Finished?" Lassiter said, and took up the tray without waiting for a reply.

"Now it's time to get down to business," Fordyce said, stepped closer to stand by Zoffany. "We have so much to do!"

I won't let them take me, she thought. I'd rather take my chances in the sea.

She stood up carefully and tried to give a reassuring smile. Her two captors stood to either side of her and ushered her out of the room, through the double doors, and into a corridor. She saw a door at the far end, and beyond it the line of the horizon. She braced herself, wishing she had used her gym membership more often.

"Here we are!" said Lassiter, indicating a steep staircase to the lower deck.

Now or never, thought Zoffany.

She thought she might make it. For a few seconds, she easily outdistanced Lassiter and Fordyce, but then she hit the door at the end of the corridor. It was locked. As she struggled with the knob, she began to moan in despair, twisting around to see her captors approaching at a leisurely jog. When they took her by the arms, they were quite gentle.

"No, going outside is not sensible," said Fordyce. "Far too chilly!"

"Please, please don't do this!" she begged.

"Sorry," said Lassiter, "we have our orders."

Zoffany started to struggle, but she soon realized she was in the grip of people who were used to overcoming resistance.

"Of course, you're nervous," Lassiter said. "But you have a great purpose to fulfill!"

"We believe that children are our future," added Fordyce.

"Right!" Zoffany responded, still digging her heels in. "A very laudable sentiment."

"The young ladies will be so pleased to meet you," added Fordyce, as he and his cohort lifted her off her feet.

"Young ladies?" she asked.

"Yes," Fordyce explained, "the young ladies are down in the luxury cabins."

Zoffany was manhandled down the stairway and taken along a passageway with a row of sliding doors. The first one was opened, and Zoffany found herself staring at girl of about six. The girl was sitting on the edge of a bed, eating what seemed to be a bowl of pasta. Then Zoffany realized what was actually in the bowl, a mess of bloody gray matter.

"Isn't she sweet?" asked Lassiter. "And growing so fast."

Zoffany felt too sick and frightened to speak. The girl-creature looked up, mouth bloody. Zoffany felt a crawling sensation in her mind, cool tendrils touching her thoughts, glancing at her memories.

Oh God, immature queens survived.

The girl-creature smiled, her teeth pale and sharp.

"Now," Lassiter said, sliding the door shut, "your role in this new phase is vital. Our final orders were to make sure we helped bring all your wonderful knowledge to the young ladies."

"Of course," Zoffany said, resignedly. "Very logical."

"I'm glad you see it that way," Fordyce said brightly, as he steered her into another cabin. This one was unoccupied, except for a small, dark egg in a bowl on a bedside table. Lassiter began to take off Zoffany's shirt as Fordyce picked up the egg.

"It's just ready," he told Zoffany. "Won't keep you waiting more than a couple of minutes."

Zoffany made one last effort to break free, but Lassiter quickly clamped a pad of cotton over her nose and mouth. As the fumes took effect, she felt the attendants lift her and lay her gently down, face to the wall. She was not quite unconscious when the sting of contact came, and all her detailed knowledge of the Interlopers, and their complex interactions with human biology, began to drain away.
