Zedde masters written portraits. Her characterization shimmers. Celeste, Wynne's sister, is brutal, ruthless. She might have easily been the assassin herself had she her sister's exactitude in loving and leaving a clean trail of bodies. She expects "perfection in all things, especially women." Yet that certainly isn't Wynne's misconception; perfection, for her, is "likely to be an illusion."
What intrigues me most in the novella is the expedient, skillful manner in which Zedde makes me fall in love with Wynne and Nic's plunge into the throes of attraction! I want more of the tantalizing twosome, although I patiently await the reappearance of Remi and Claudia as well!
Undoubtedly, Zedde still loves a good challenge and a luscious stretch, even at the top of her game.
Nightshade: A Novella is intriguing with the main character as an assassin and what appears to her dealing with the past and present. The character definitely has star power and much character development could push to make a following book. However I feel Fiona Zedde slacked on this book...a lot.
First, where is the explicit sex scenes? My favorite book by Fiona Zedde is Every Dark Desire which I greatly enjoy those scenes along with the characters' personalities throughout the book.
Secondly, the main character as an assassin is interesting but one complete description with her doing what needs to be done was it? Provide more.
Third, the love interest was definitely odd but it does work...slightly. The story here just has enough to move the book along but at the end it was forgettable.
Overall, I felt Nightshade: A Novella had great potential for a longer story with character developments flourishing with imagination like Fiona Zedde's previous books such as Every Dark Desire (my most favorite!) and Bliss. Even though I greatly enjoy her short stories in the all in one book When She Says Yes (there are four stories that stand out to me, which I love!), I feel this book Nightshade: A Novella actually should have been a short story included instead. There was just not enough imagination provided to make the story stand out as a full on book.
Out of ten stars, I give 5 stars.
