I passed the JLPT N3 this past year, through using this series even though I did not complete all of the books. This book just list vocabulary for the most part. I think the vocabulary in this book is really useful, especially since it teaches so much every day vocabulary that the Genki textbook series did not teach me and it would have been useful to have gone through this book before I studied abroad in Japan for a few months. I also used StickyStudy Kanji on the iOS app store to study with as well; it has a list of JLPT N3 vocabulary (and Kanji), which helped me on the test. I think I used StickyStudy more than this book, but using both probably helped me pass the N3. I definitely suggest working through some kind of JLPT books if you are planning to take the test, because having a Japanese major and going to Japan for a few months to study will not guarantee you know the material on the test to pass it.

I'm currently studying for the N3 and was a little hesitant to buy any guides because I studied for the N4 only using free resources from the internet. I decided to go with this after realizing how unstimulating (and not great for actually improving my Japanese) studying from a cold list of words was. I'm currently going through all the chapters and making Anki flashcards from the vocabulary words and the phrases the book offers, and even though making my own cards is a lot of work, I'm confident that it will pay off. I can't say how useful it is to see the vocabulary words in action, with useful example phrases that help to indicate grammar and usage. Grouping things thematically (rather than going in random or alphabetical order, hahah, like I did for the N4) is also very helpful for memorization. Studying with this book as a guide, I feel like I'm learning this vocabulary with the goal of actually using it, rather than just stocking a thousand words away just for the JLPT.

If you have the old N2 book of this, don't buy this book! They are exactly the same.

This book is good if you want to learn real world Japanese. I've been in Japan for three years now, and I had wished I had studied directly from the N2 books years ago. Everything you learn in this book you'll actually see in real life if you're in Japan. Since it's a vocabulary book, get yourself a good flashcard program for your computer and continue to review the words until they finally stick. A word of warning though, you may have to look some words up in a dictionary to fully understand the Japanese word. I've found a lot of the definitions to be vague.

I've found the book to be good in preparing you for the JLPT. It has daily quizzes and then a "end of week" quiz that tests what you've learned the past week. Everything is set up exactly as the JLPT so you won't have any surprises.

I really like this book; once you read through the instructions for it, is very easy to understand (not sure what the other reviews were complaining about). Like any textbook, it requires dedication and practice. Will probably buy again when I get to N2.
