"Does she want to use my tools?" I wonder.
"No...she can't use my tools." I answer myself.
Well, the issue with her using my tools is, my tools are sentient, and have a thirst for human blood. My blood. As much of my blood as they can get out of me. They're evil, ugly, greedy, angry, possibly cursed, blood-thirsty tools, and I don't want her messing them up.
So I got her these. These seem solid, with a good feel. I wouldn't use these on any wood that's super-hard,(think ebony, or something else from Africa) but they'll get the cut on, on most of your favorite woods. It seems clear that these tools have no associations to any ancient evil, nor have they taken any part in any witchcraft. Which is good, because, when they are used to make witchcraftian things,(those scrying mirrors of epic-ness I mentioned) that won't transfer any evil or unknown energies unto her work.
I spent all of twenty-three minutes checking these out, and they're good. They made smooth lines in some dry pine I had, and they demanded no blood. from me. I'm of the opinion that they need some edge honing, but I'm not the one that's going to be using them. However, since I'm pretty sure I'm going to be the one sharpening them, I'm compelled to say that this set does come with a stone. I also found a stone on the side of the road. Sharpen your tools on a something decent. I like my [brand name that I'm not paid for to name drop] diamond sharpener.
They've been in their plastic bag since I test-stabbed some wood. It's not a bad little bag. Also, being plastic, it keeps them from oxidising or otherwise reacting to the various noxious chemicals and chemical reactions I have going in my garage. I can't say it's the greatest plastic case ever, but...whatever. It kept them from rattling around in the box when it was shipping to me. Winning.
I imagine that, should she ever get around to doing any of the awesome projects that she keeps talking on great lengths about, that these will work well for her. They're good for beginner/intermediate skill level work, and I could see getting some fairly intricate details from the more skilled artists among us. Also, they're good for the occasional whittling, when your pocket knife just isn't cutting it.
I am enough of a woodcarver to say this set would work well for detail work on softer carving woods. You would need to add a good knife (and a few larger gouges) for roughing out. Traditionally, cherry was used for Japanese woodblocks and I have not yet tried the tools on that harder wood. These tools are not intended for rough work and would break if you were to try to pry out chunks of wood with them.
You can easily pay more than the cost of this whole set for a single Flexcut or Dockyard microtool. The high end tools may be more durable in the long term but for everyday use or for someone who wants to try out a new technique, it would be very hard to beat this set.
But seriously, these little gems cost twelve dollars. There are TWELVE carving tools. That's a buck a tool. And you expected custom Gerber blades in the knives?
These are carbon steel, excellent sharp little blades. Look at them, they are quite thin and very hard; they'll break! No surprises there.
I'm doing some modifications to a walnut wood stock, the wood is pretty hard, but I use these cheapy knives because with a little care they'll pull a nice long curl out of the wood. Lot's of nice long, thin curls will get you where you want to go, just be easy on the tools and on your hands. Overall a good little delicate carving set. For the money? Stellar.
