First, understand that Nikon makes two lines of lenses: A professional line, and a consumer line. The consumer lenses are (very generally speaking) a huge step down in image quality. And before you start flaming me, I know that there are some exceptions, but this lens is certainly not one of them. It is a consumer (shall I say "budget"?) lens on par with some inexpensive third party brands I started out with 30 years ago. On the other hand, there's the 70-200 f/2.8 VR (a Pro line lens), which has been a workhorse for me over the past four years. It is quick to focus, tack sharp, and provides exceptional color and bokeh. Coming from the 70-200, this 200-500 is very slow to focus and not sharp at all. The color is dull and images are soft. I missed dozens of shots due to slow focus that I'm confident the 70-200 would have nailed.
Having said that, it is very competitively priced and is one of the least expensive ways to gain much needed focal length. But the lens is also VERY heavy, and takes nearly two full turns of the barrel to get from 200 to 500mm. Awkward is putting it mildly. If you order it, pay another $15 or $20 for a monopod to support its weight. Fortunately it comes with the foot. Oh, and don't expect it to fit into your camera bag, there's a separate cloth drawstring pouch that it also comes with. But it offers very little protection.
Consider a teleconverter before you make this purchase.
