From the manufacturer
Extend your reach. Lighten your load.
Optimized for Nikon’s mirrorless Z system, the Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x increases the reach of compatible lenses by 1.4x (40%) while retaining 100% of the lens’ resolution, AF and VR functionality, minimum focusing distances and weather-sealing.
40% more reach. 100% resolution.
With the Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x, you can achieve tight compositions with the full resolution of your sensor by shooting in the native image area of your camera. You might already be approximating this effect with in-camera cropping, but that cuts out over 50% of your image sensor's pixels.
Forget it's even there.
Retain all of your compatible lens’ AF functionality and speed, VR capabilities and minimum focusing distance, with only 1 stop of light loss and very little weight and length gain. The lens' illuminated information panel will even display the correctly converted focal length.
Use every focus point.
The Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x can use every focus point of your Z camera’s sensor all the way to f/11—unprecedented for teleconverters.
AF accuracy may decrease and focusing speed may lower according to subjects and shooting situations.
Make a big deal of little things.
The Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x maintains the close focusing capability of NIKKOR Z lenses while enlarging the reproduction ratio by 1.4x that of the main lens. When used with NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S, for example, you can zoom in to 280mm from just 3.28 feet away to reveal the tiniest details.
Added depth and impact.
The Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x enhances bokeh by reducing the depth of field by 50%. This separates your subject from those creamy backgrounds even more, so you can draw attention where you want it to be. Ideal for portraits and wildlife.
Ready for tough conditions.
The Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x has anti-slip knurling for improved grip, Nikon's non-stick Fluorine Coat on the front and rear elements to make cleaning a breeze and drip sealing equivalent to that of an S-Line lens.

Product Description
For those who look to the distance—birders, nature and wildlife photographers, aircraft, sports and action photographers—a teleconverter can be the difference between a hit and a miss. And the difference between a long, heavy rig and a shorter, nimble one. Optimized for the compact mirrorless Z system, the Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x increases the reach of compatible lenses by 1.4x (40%) while retaining 100% resolution, AF and VR functionality, minimum focusing distances and weather-sealing.

Teleconverters represent the art of compromise. They'll give you extra reach, but they'll also degrade your image (particularly contrast) and they'll reduce your exposure (by 1-stop in the case of the 1.4x). So the question is do you really need a teleconverter? If your Nikon Z has DX mode, then you're better off using DX mode (and/or modestly cropping in post) if that fills enough of the frame for your composition.
Nikon has done a great job designing some of their Z lenses (I refer to these as their recommended lenses) to pair nicely with the 1.4x Z teleconverter. I don't hesitate to use the 1.4x Z teleconverter on my Z 400mm/f4.5 or my Z 70-200mm/f2.8 in addition to DX mode on my camera. With judicious sharpening in post, the image quality is reasonably close to the naked lens (when pixel peeping). As long as you're not making very large prints, you'd be hard pressed to pick out the teleconverter image from the naked lens.
Based on my observations, the image quality is as follows:
1) Naked lens, FX mode
2) Naked lens, DX mode (or crop in post)
3) Nikon recommended Z lens + Z teleconverter, FX mode
4) Nikon recommended Z lens + Z teleconverter, DX mode
Keep in mind that your ability to (further) crop in post starts to become more limited as you work your way down from option 1 to option 4 above. Nevertheless, I've gotten some really nice images with option 4 with mild/mod sharpening and a modest crop in post.
If you need more reach than option 2 can give you, definitely give the Z 1.4x teleconverter a try. I've been very pleased with it.

Preamble: When buying this lens through Amazon, be sure to check which seller you purchase from. If you want a Canadian warranty, be sure to buy from a Nikon-Canada authorized reseller.
My background is using supertelephoto prime and zoom lenses over decades. I have used Nikon and 3rd party TCs on the Nikon F mount. I began transitioning to Nikon Z several years ago and was, most recently, using the FTZ/ 200-500VR and TC-14e III so I have some basis for comparison that may be of interest to a few people. With that out of the way...
TCs are a mixed bag in many cases. More reach: Less light. You can't have one without the other. Since there are no other TCs in the Nikon ecosystem at present, this is the one to get (or the TC-2.0X... more on that later).
Before you buy the Z TC-1.4X, be sure to look at Nikon's list of compatible lenses; only buy the TC if your lens is on that list. Even if that's the case, only use a TC if:
- you NEED more reach
- you are able to shoot at low ISO
The FTZ adapters are not on that list so this teleconverter will not work with FTZ-adapted F-mount lenses.
As soon as you have to raise ISO past a certain point (know your camera but it's not a stretch to say anything past ISO 800), it's better to not use the TC and simply crop.
If all things line up favorably, buy this TC.
While I won't compare the 200-500 to the 180-600, I'll offer a brief comment about the 200-500 w TC-1.4e III vs the 180-600 w Z TC-1.4X. While both lenses perform well with a 1.4x TC (in my opinion), I notice -- and prefer -- the 840mm reach I get with the Z combination over the 700mm reach of the F-mount combination. It's a substantial difference. Optically, with the TC, while the 200-500VR was pretty good at f/8, I found it performed better at f/9 (stopped down 1/3): I find the 180-600 does about as well wide open as it does 1/3 stopped down so it's still useful at f/9.
While this review is not about the Z TC-2.0X, in the context of the search for reach with the 180-600, I feel that TC should be reserved only for Nikon's finest lenses whose optics can resolve that level of detail remaining mindful of the limitations imposed by higher ISOs. The Nikon 180-600 is a nice lens but, at f/13, I'll put a telescope in front of it before I consider putting the TC-2.0X on the 180-600.
Anyway, back to the Z TC-1.4X, I have used it on the Z 70-200 S, Z 180-600 and Z 70-180. I recommend it when you need the reach and can sacrifice the light.
