Though the lens is heavy, it has great coverage (18-200mm) and eliminates the need to carry two lenses with me. I have used this lens for taking landscape (nature) pictures, buildings, florals, portraits of people, group shots with lots of people (18mm comes in handy), events (sports, concerts, conferences, etc), and it's my primary lens when I travel or go on vacation.
There are 3 switches on the lens: M(anual)/A(utomatic), VR-On/Off, and Normal/Active. I keep my lens set to Auto with VR-On and Normal. I have used the Active mode with great results. For example, I set the lens to Active while I'm a passenger in the car. I can then take pictures of buildings, etc while my hubby is driving. The Active mode makes the object(s) I'm focusing on stand still.
My version does have the lens creep. Not an issue for me as I'm careful not to leave it zoomed out while walking around. When I leave my lens at normal or 18mm position, the lens stays in place.
This lens works well my with my D7000. The D7k handles low light situations nicely. With this lens, I set my D7k to go no higher than ISO 3200 and I get beautiful results. With this camera and lens combination, the camera can be quite heavy. That's not necessarily a bad thing as it feels well balanced in my hands.
When I use my D40 with this lens, I do notice and feel a slight imbalance between camera and lens. I'm spoiled with my D7k. :)
I use a Crumpler Industry Disgrace strap with my D7k and this 18-200mm lens. This strap is well padded and well constructed and reduces the stress on my neck.
Overall, I have taken many wonderful pictures with this lens. I recommend this lens with the D7k because it feels great and it's well balanced in my hand.
And it survived my bike accident when I flipped over a bike. Almost broke both arms, but lens had only a scuff on the bottom lip where you screw on the hood. Nothing happened to it, focus and performance still the same. Nikon is great.
I've read a lot of GOOD reveiws about the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens on Amazon. All the good reviews about this lens encouraged me to go ahead and purchase it. I do admit, it is a bit expensive. But, I am so glad that I purchase it anyway.
Since the first day that I've put it on my D60, I never have to remove/replace it with the 55-200mm lens when ever I needed a long distant shot. It's been almost 30 days since I've put it on my D60 and I've been having lots of fun taking pictures with this lens (especially in the Zoo). The lens takes beautiful pictures!
Overall, I am very happy and glad that I purchased this lens for my D60. NOW, I am going to get rid of the 55-200mm VR Lens and sell it on eBay. I don't need it anymore!!!!
One more thing, I bought this lens USED in Amazon for $530.00. The original owner says that he only had the lens for 4 months and just upgraded to a Nikon 80-400mm VR Lens.
If you don't want to spend $600.00 - $700.00 on a NEW Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens. Get a used one. Ask the seller questions before you make your purchase. Ask how long he/she had the lens, reason why he/she is selling the lens, condition of the lens and if possible ask for pictures!
I hope that my review helps!
It is the lens that has opened many doors for me as a photographer, by allowing me to bring out the exact aesthetic visual I was wanting to capture from either the wide (18mm) or close up shots (200mm).
After only 4 months of experience with it, I feel it has already unlocked the core of my ability.
And since it's such an awesome thing to interchange lenses with bodies; my 18-200mm is going to look bad ass on the D3200. (Upgrading even further)
