Photo of small brown bird (dsc_0026.jpg): f/6.3; 1/500 seconds; 300.0 mm (35 mm equivalent: 450.0 mm); VR On; Standard Picture Control; ADL Auto; ~45 foot distance to bird.
Photo of forward looking small bird (dsc_0058.jpg): f/6.3; 1/500 seconds; 300.0 mm (35 mm equivalent: 450.0 mm); VR On; Standard Picture Control; ADL Auto; ~45 foot distance to bird.
Photo of bird asking for free food (dsc_3265.jpg): 1/500 seconds; f/8.0; ISO 400; 300.0 mm; VR On; Neutral Picture Control; ADL Off; ~15 feet away.
Photo of moon (dsc_0336.jpg): 1/500s; f/6.3; ISO 200; 300mm; VR On; Neutral Picture Control; ADL Off; Minor editing within Nikon Capture NX-D.
FYI: I seem to have a better experience with duplicating my naked eye observations with using Neutral Picture Control and switching Active D-Lighting off. Although I'm sure Active D-Lighting and Standard (or other) Picture Controls have their use with artistic photos, the additional effects seem to augment the reality of the colors towards the unrealistic end of the spectrum. Active D-Lighting will cause problems with third party raw editing software.
PROS
1) Small and light portable zoom lens.
2) Really good magnification capabilities. Great for capturing photos of license plates!
3) Optical VR significantly helps! Without Optical VR, freehand >200mm focal length usage is almost useless, due to image movement blurring. I immediately noticed I could acquire excellent images at ~3.5 stops less. (eg. Without Optical VR image stabilization, at least 1/300 seconds exposure time is required while using no tripod. With Optical VR image stabilization, 1/40 seconds exposure time while using no tripod is easily possible.)
CONS
1) Plastic mount flange, easily breaks. My initial purchased lens broke sometime during 1-15 days of initial use. A lot of weight for a cheap and weak plastic mounting flange! Does not look to be a high impact plastic at all. (Although, a somewhat easily replaceable, $7 part.)
2) Had to return the second purchased lens due to Nikon support stating I likely have a defect on the second lens, and will follow-up as I perform more testing. In brief, the focal point is moving 1-2 mm while pushing the shutter release button halfway, and image stabilization is requiring 1-2 second delay until focus. When pushing the shutter release button fully and instantaneously taking the image/exposure, there are significant unfocused areas due to this 1-2 mm shift with 1-2 second delay in focus. My first purchased 70-300mm lens apparently had no issues with focus during such instantaneous shutter release exposures, and I would have noticed the significant movement of the focal point. (eg. Focus Mode AF-S; AF-Area Mode: Single Point.) 2017.07.19 Apparently this issue with the focal point moving due to image stabilization appears to be normal activity, yet Nikon support wasn't aware of this occurring. Nor did many, if anybody, notice this as normal activity within the public forums.
3) Had to replace the third lens, due to a brass/gold colored chip on the inside front lens. Again sent for a replacement through Amazon.com and readily received a replacement.
4) The outer lens is only 1 3/4 inches diameter, and seems to be a very small diameter lens compared to some of the more costly zoom lenses I've used in the past. I think the small diameter lens is one of the offsets of being light and portable; and due to the smaller lens, the sensor is not able to receive as much light through the smaller lens. I'm guessing, higher apertures will require a longer exposure time, while the background is still significantly blurred at F/11-F/16 apertures. Since I currently have no other zoom lens to compare to, this maybe something others with access to more lens may want to compare or keep an eye on.
5) On some or most of these AF-P lenses, can hear a main spring bind/snap on the interior of the unit while zooming in/out through the entire focal length. My guess is their quality testing is performed within a very noisy factory, or conditions which might deter good quality testing from occurring? (Speculative but might help explain why some of these minor issues are sneaking through, or maybe they're due to reselling by third parties.) None the less, I still enjoy these lighter AF-P lenses.

Camera bodies used with this lens are the Nikon D5500 and D500.
Build quality is... acceptable for what the lens is but the plastic flange mount is a serious turn off. I understand an all plastic construction cuts down on weight, which is a fairly decent pro for this lens by the way, but skimping on the mount is just asking for trouble down the road.
The Vibration Reduction (VR) feature of this lens wonderfully smooths out shaky hands but seems to add a slight blur to images if left on when mounted on a tripod. A big downside is that no VR "on/off" switch is present on the lens which becomes a problem when trying to track birds in flight at high shutter speed on the fly. This is a problem because the VR does not seem to be tuned for panning stabilization which adds a degree of blur when taking shots while tracking a target. VR controls are located inside the Menu on your Nikon camera but a firmware update may be required and even then not all cameras are compatible with the lens. It is assumed when using this lens with a non-compatible Nikon body that the VR will remain ON at all times.
Auto Focus (AF) speed/accuracy is a mixed bag... on the one hand it will focus fast and lock on target very quickly, and it hunts far less than other DX telephoto lenses I've used. In fact, I've only ever caught it hunting in near night time conditions and even then it still manages to find focus a majority of the time.
On the other hand, the AF does not seem to be particularly accurate. AF will get you most of the way to your target in focus, but when shooting fairly distant targets at 300mm I find it slightly misses the mark.
AF in video mode is a completely different story though. In Live View the AF is a slight bit slower but it focus pulls so smoothly you'd almost swear you were using a Canon camera instead of a Nikon. Very rarely does it hunt, usually locking focus on near and distant targets without the typical Nikon back and forth "waffling" focus Nikon seems to be known for in Live View mode. The stepping motors are definitely doing their job here, doing it well and I absolutely love it for organic looking video focus. I also forgot to mention early on that it is far more accurate in Live View mode for pictures, even if it is a might bit slower on the focus.
Honestly, I could see myself giving this lens a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars if but for 2 glaring issues...
First chromatic aberration; the purple fringe wide open at 4.5 or 6.3 at 300mm is EXTREMELY noticeable, especially in bright scenes and absolutely requires post processing in Lightroom to be rid of it. Even after applying the Nikon lens correction profile you will still need to spot fix the purple fringe a majority of the time.
Second vignetting; Originally I noticed the vignetting in my pictures and didn't think it was that bad until I applied the Nikon lens correction profile in Lightroom and watched the corners brighten up considerably. Normally this wouldn't be such a huge thing as it is far less bothersome than chromatic aberration except for the fact that this lens is designed for VIDEO.
Which brings me to why I rate it 3 out of 5 stars. And please make no mistake, my 3 out of 5 means I actually LIKE the lens, but that I also acknowledge its issues.
Post production for video to solve this lens's issues is all done manually in video editing programs and it quickly becomes tedious trying to remove the purple fringe and vignetting every single time you shoot something.
The lens is also slightly less sharp than the same priced AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm 1:4.5-5.6G ED VR which means you won't be able to crop in as much on a photo while at peak image quality.
So, tl:dr time, what I like about the lens:
Fast focus, live view focus looks/feels organic, you can manually focus the lens while it is auto focusing (giant plus), the focus ring is smooth as butter, and the VR makes hand holding shots/videos a joy.
What I don't like about the lens:
Plastic flange mount, no VR switch or easily accessible on/off toggle, Auto Focus doesn't seem to be as accurate as it is fast at longer focal lengths, extreme chromatic aberration in bright scenes (especially at 300mm wide open), vignetting on a DX lens (first one I've used that has it), and it's not as sharp as a lens that, while inferior in auto focus, costs the same (The 55-300mm 1:4.5-5.6G ED VR also doesn't have chromatic aberration or vignetting AND it has a metal flange mount...).
Honestly, if they slapped the focus ring, stepping motors and VR from the AF-P 70-300mm into the DX 55-300mm 1:4.5-5.6G ED VR it would be a nearly perfect lens.

- The box was completely crushed
- The box had already been opened before
- The protection bag was missing
- The hood was missing
- The instruction booklet was missing
- The certificate of authenticity and warranty was missing
- The original protective padding was missing
The only thing in the box was a photocopied set of instructions which I don’t know where it comes from, and the lens poorly wrapped.
I bought many lenses for my Nikon and it is the worst I have ever seen. Really not recommend.

I would recommend this lens for beginner to intermediate photographers.

I would recommend this lens for beginner to intermediate photographers.

Image quality, so far, seems excellent. I had been worried by the ‘very good for the money’ tag, but this seems to be unfounded in the image quality area. Various online review give detailed accounts of what they think of the lens across the varying focal lengths etc. and this, so far, seems to be the case. The image quality seems to be very good.
The only area that does/may let the lens down is build quality, or perceived build quality. It is a light lens and made out of plastic. This is where the ‘very good for the money’ comes in. Plastic mounts and not weather sealed makes this a light low-end lens. If you can live with this then it’s a bargain.
The supplied unit (fulfilled by Amazon) came with a Standard International warranty, but is imported as documents indicate Nikon Australia. Again, if this doesn’t worry you it’s a bargain.
Go careful with matching to the correct camera (limited to new models) and you can't go wrong.
