The S8000 was top rated in Consumer Reports. What is the story with having to leave the battery in the camera to charge it? Everything I have read seems to indicate that the S8100 is well worth the extra money.

The S8100's are going down in price now. If you look on here you'll see they're around $250 or less. Also, I've seen in some local stores (Wal-Mart, Target and Best Buy) they're on sale for $250. So if you want an S8100 they aren't $300 anymore. I'm going to purchase one but have to wait til we get our tax money back either late January or early February. I wish I could get one now! Hope that information helped. :)

Don't buy this camera! I should have read the posts!! I had the lens error twice! I am getting my money back and will buy something else. Nikon wake up! Everyone is having issues with this camera! Remove it from the shelves and build a better product!

I had the same issue and they tried to tell me that it was a result of impact too. Not true. They wanted to charge $100 to tix but finally agreed to fix. I am disappointed and frustrated with the experience. There is a problem that is causing lens error. Beware. Otherwise the camera takes great pix.

The Coolpix 8000 is a very good camera and although less expensive thatn the S8100, the S8100 is coming down in price and can be purchased for less tha $50.00 more than the S8000 if you shop around. The S8100 has a CMOS focusing system, which produces sharper images than than the S8000. Much less grain even though it is a 12.1 MP camera vs. the 14.2 MP S8000. Buy the S8100. It is wort the extra few dollars.
