I looked at the Sony HX400V/B and the Canon SX60 and this one had the feel and features that best suited me.
Only small gripe is you need to manually pop up the flash. Our prior Sony zoom would pop-up the flash automatically in low light situations but that one had the flash in the wrong spot as your finger was usually on top of it. Oh well a very impressive camera and my wife likes the Wi-Fi so we can transfer to her iPhone and she can post pictures from anywhere.
Anyway, back to the camera. I got a couple of extra batteries and a couple of 32 gig high speed memory cards to go with it, and an external charger. If I had to knock a point off for one thing, it's the fact that this camera doesn't come with an external charger. You have to plug the camera into a USB cable to charge it. I don't mind doing that with my phone, but for some reason I really dislike that for a camera. If I'm on the road, I don't want to have to find a USB charger I guess, even though I could use the same one my phone uses. I didn't take any points off for that since it's my personal preference.
Operation of the camera can be very simple in full auto mode, and very complicated to the amateur in manual modes. Take the time to look at some youtube videos on how to do simple things with an SLR style camera. One of the biggest things to learn how to do is shutter priority. In low light, especially at night, this camera wants to compensate and raise the ISO rating so that the night sky really lights up. If I'm taking pictures of Christmas lights or something like that, I don't want that to happen. I want the night to be dark and the lights to be bright. To do that I change to shutter priority and manually choose a shutter speed between about 1/30 and 1/60th of a second. Play around with it and you'll see what the differences are. For sports action, I'll bump the shutter speed WAY up to 1/1000, or even higher. For full sun with the zoom level set low, I've taken pictures at 1/4000 and they came out simply gorgeous. You can literally freeze the bursting balloon in a water balloon fight. As you zoom in, you do want to drop that shutter speed down to 1/1000 or below so the camera can gather enough light to give you that good shot. I know there are going to be people out there that argue with me, but for me, and to teach my 10 and 12 year old daughters to take really cool pictures, learning shutter priority was one of the best things we could do.
Now, it's just as capable at other things too. The modes where you can take pictures of the clouds moving or people moving on a city street are WAY cool and easy to do. You'll want a tripod for sure, but it's really fun to play around with.
Battery life is fantastic. I took the camera to a holiday parade and got over 400 pictures and it was still going strong. None were with flash so that helped the battery last a little longer I'm sure.
Picture and video quality is amazing. I use the video feature to do youtube videos and they are so clear and accurate. The microphone is spectacular as well. The voice and ambient noises are very clear and accurate. I wasn't expecting that but since I started using it for video as well, it's a nice bonus.
The flash is really nice and powerful, but doesn't overpower the subject either. It works well as a fill flash, or in low lights as an illuminating flash. It can really fill a room nicely too. It's not automatic. You have to hit a button beside the flash to make it pop up so in low light situations you have to remember to do that before your moment passes by.
I've talked about my daughters using this camera too. This is capable of being very automatic when it needs to be, so almost anyone can use it. Or, for more advanced users, there is a ton of manual modes you can set, all the way up to full manual. It really does let you choose what your user level is and will adjust to your capabilities.
Oh, I almost forgot image stabilization. It's incredible! I love the image stabilization on this SO much! I can zoom up to the biggest zoom level, and I do still have to have a steady hand, but the image stabilization will do a really excellent job of keeping that subject still and allow me to get a great picture. I've used this for my daughter's music concerts to get close up shots, like so close her head is the only thing in the frame, and I'm halfway back in the audience!
We've talked about the zoom, but let's get into that a bit more. This zoom lets you get 60 times closer than a standard lense. It really is very good. I can sit in the stands at a softball game, and zoom in on the face of the outfielder way back in the back of the ball field. To do that with a camera that lets you change the lense, you would have to get one of those very expensive, massive lenses like you see the guys using on the sidelines at the pro sports events.
One of the other nice features of this camera is the built in wifi. I am able to connect my phone to it with the Nikon Wireless Management Utiity (free download). You can view what the camera is seeing, and control the operation of the camera. It is really useful to let you compose a photo with you in it, then snap the photo without having to touch the camera. You can view it on your phone and when it looks good, click the capture button.
In conclusion, I'm really glad I got this. I think it's going to serve my daughters and I well for years to come. If it were only waterproof, I would want to give it 6 stars! I have an action camera on the way for that though! If you want to step up from the world of point and shoot cameras to one that has a few more options and a lot more zoom, then this is one excellent choice. Thumbs up Nikon! Thumbs up!
UPDATE: After having used this for a while, I had to drop this down to a 4 star review, and I have to put a disclaimer on recommending it. There are some things this camera excels at, and some things I've found it falls far short on. The zoom and anti-shake are fantastic. The picture quality is great and the battery life is great. I use it to make youtube videos and it works beautifully for that. The audio on the recording is top notch and extremely clear with no muting. BUT.... there are things it doesn't do well at. When you are recording video and switch from recording things close to far, or the other way around, the camera doesn't always refocus until you stop recording and start again forcing it to refocus. The focus at high zoom level is finicky. If it's a high contrast view, it focuses pretty well, but if the colors are fairly level then it has trouble focusing. Shooting at extreme close up is the same. If you are in macro mode taking pictures, the focus doesn't always want to work at all. If you get really close (like right up on it) it will focus, but then your lens is totally obstructing the object so it has no lighting. If you back off and try to zoom more than the tiniest bit, the macro function can't handle that and it won't focus. If you are shooting video and get closer than about maybe 12-15 inches, perhaps farther, then it won't focus at all... no matter what you do. If it had a manual focus ring or lever of some sort then this would not be such an issue. It is supposed to have a manual focus mode, for these issues, that mode is totally worthless. The manual focus is more for helping to get exact focus on a shot where you are trying to highlight one area and have the rest of the shot that is closer or farther away out of focus.
So, if you don't need to do any of these things, it's still a great camera, but since I need to use it for such a wide variety of functions and close up work, I can't recommend it and would not buy it again at this price.
Maybe I'm easily impressed (and if so, I'm not sure anything is really wrong with that) but I adore this camera. The photos are superb, I really enjoy playing with all the different modes, and WOW at the zoom!
Some of the pictures I've gotten with this camera are just unbelievable. The bird and moon settings are my favorite, and I attached a few to share. I would buy this camera again and again!
It's very light and easy to carry and you don't have to carry spare lenses. It's very simple to use for the novice photographer..... I could go on and on. It was well worth the cost. To me it's the best at a very low price!
