After some very helpful suggestions from a few folks responding to this review, I am getting a better handle on using it. I can fix the background blowing out to an almost solid white when the background is brighter than the foreground. I know NOT to use the center focus, but aside from that I still have to mess around to get it to focus on what I want to take a picture of.
I tried using the flash fill on the shots with bright backgrounds but it didn't improve improve the shot. The screen also went completely white when the flash went off. That was a surprise.
I tried to take a picture of a billboard beside the freeway, just for practice, but it couldn't focus on it until the picture on the billboard changed to one with a bright background.
At this point I still need to win the focus fight, and taking multiple pictures & pics with moving objects. If I can get those resolved, this camera MIGHT just make a 5.
Day 1 with my new Nikon L840 - 1 star
My fiancee bought this for me from Amazon for Christmas. I was really excited to get a new camera because my 2 year old Coolpix S6000 has started turning itself off after I take one or two pictures with it. I had thought the issue was batteries but I bought 2 new ones and it still does the same thing.
So..... I pulled it out of the box and started checking it out. The first thing I noticed it that it uses AA batteries....FOUR of them. So much for being a light weight camera...and I hope it'll run on rechargeables since there are FOUR of them.
The second thing I noticed was that the wrist strap was WAY too small for my wrist. I'm a skinny guy, if it doesn't fit my wrist it's problaby not going to fit yours. Ok, that's just the wrist strap. I'll use the neck strap instead.
Whoops, the neck strap is cheesy as all get out. It IS possible to get it setup so it doesn't just fall off instantly but you'll spend several minutes pulling slack in from the strap, feeding it through the retainers, through the first sleeve, in and out of the binding sleeve and then pulling the slack back through the binder and sleeve an inch at a time until it's tight and ready to go. You will NOT be putting it on and taking it off again. WAY to big a hassle. I guess Nikon never heard of the standard hook clips. So, with the wrist strap from my dead Nikon on it, I'm ready to go.
I pointed it through the archway at my Christmas tree, held the button half way down to get a lock and.....it wanted to take a picture of the chair halfway between me and the Christmas tree....no matter WHAT I did it just really loved that chair. Crap, time to get out the manual. I found that you can have it focus on the center of the picture. Took a picture of the tree and boom, got a great first picture, really ready to go now.
We went to my fiancee's daughters house for Christmas and I took over 100 pictures, everything looked awesomely clear in the display so I jsut concentrated on pics of babies, kids, hugs, and presents getting opened. Got home VERY excited to look at all the amazing pics..... NOT.
Yeah, they were all focused beautifully on the the center of each pic... a clear round spot about 3 feet in diameter and everything else a worthless blur. I THINK I can crop the center out of TWO of them and get decent results.
I have Christmas pictures going back EVERY year from the time my kids were babies...but not THIS year. Thanks Nikon!
I have now had this Nikon camera for over a year and now can give a decent review on this Nikon camera.
Pros: Nice 38X optical zoom lens, exposure controls, easy to use, great sized rubberized hand grip, nice tilt-out rear LCD view-finder, takes SD cards, uses 4 AA batteries, has really good battery life & takes a pretty very good photo indoors [with flash] or outdoors in full daylight conditions.
Cons: It feels so cheap with so much plastic, the auto focus sometimes is a bit slow, cumbersome menu system & no mode wheel on top of the camera since there are very few manual settings this camera can do.
Overall photo quality seems quite good with this camera. Indoor photo quality with flash & outdoor photo quality in full daylight are actually quite good for me. Taking photos in low-light conditions is a bit harder with this camera & photo quality drops considerably unless you use the flash, but none of my digital cameras really never took a halfway decent low-light photo anyways. Digital video quality is great. It has wi-fi for those that use it. Overall, I am very fairly pleased with the photo & video quality this digital camera produces.
I have had similar Nikon "P series" digital cameras including Nikon P-500, P-510 and a P-520 and this L-840 from Nikon compares better against the P-500 and P-510 and equals the P-520 in photo qualities. I am rather pleased overall with this Nikon camera.
If you need a fairly basic, larger, inexpensive digital camera with a decent-sized zoom that takes pretty good photos & fairly easy to use, I think this Nikon digital camera is about the best you can find in the price range and compares very favorably to similar Canon digital cameras including the SX-510HS [30X optical zoom] and SX-520HS [42X optical zoom] in photo qualities. I gave this Nikon digital camera 5 of 5 stars because I simply think it's a great basic super-zoom bridge digital camera.
UPDATE: I have now had this Nikon L-840 for over 7 months & overall photos are pretty good still, no change there. Indoor photos are still very good and really a periodic issue with the "freezing up" of the camera and me removing and reinserting the 4 AA batteries once in a great while is the only problem that has popped up. No other issues and the camera is still working pretty good. I kept the rating at 5 stars because nothing serious has happened yet with this camera for me.
