I personally bought the bundle that includes the 18-55 and the 55-200 lens. Despite the 5 star rating, I would heavily suggest for anyone to just buy the body and then a better. I would personally recommend using the Nikon 35mm 1.8G DX lens. I pretty much never used the 18-55 lens when I got the 35mm lens. If you don't like prime lenses, try the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 but that's significantly more expensive. The 55-200 lens works alright, but I would also suggest looking for something better; I personally use the Sigma 50-150 f2.8 OS lens which I found used. The two lenses that came with this camera aren't bad though and will satisfy many users. Many beginners may not care about the sharpness of their lens, but I at least do. Keep in mind also that proper technique will always trump better lenses, so put some money into training whether that would be through classes or books. However, better lenses will always help, there's no downside to having better glass.
Now some buyers may be looking at the D5300/D5500 as other potential buys. Those cameras have the same sensor so picture quality will pretty much be the same. Those higher-end APS-C cameras though do have additional features, such as bracketing, and more focus points. I kind of wish that I had bought the D5300/5500 instead but the D3300 has done a wonderful job and has not let me down. I also couldn't have known how much I would've liked photography back then. If you're buying this as a gift, you won't be risking as much of your money on a useless gift. I personally know one friend who got a D5300 as a gift and she's only used it twice over the past year.
My final thoughts:
The D3300 is an excellent beginner's camera and will serve you well. I heavily incentivize buying refurbished though. I personally don't think that buying at full retail price is worth it. If you're a beginner, you're only going to move up and switch camera bodies (either the D5000/7000 series, or full-frame) eventually so don't waste your money. Buy refurbished/used. I would also recommend buying the body only and purchasing a Nikkor 35mm f1.8G DX lens for starters.
Bonus: We paired this camera with the very reasonably priced AmazonBasics Large DSLR Gadget Bag (Orange interior) and it is a perfect fit for us. You won't regret purchasing either of these.
I was a little concerned that this was being sold by Beach Camera because I had read mixed reviews about it. However, since it was through Amazon and I know from past experience that sellers SERIOUSLY want to avoid any negative feedback to Amazon which might result in them being dropped from the site, I gave it a chance. When I received the camera kit, I was no longer concerned. It was a refurbished kit, but the refurbish was by Nikon - not Beach. All of the paperwork regarding the refurbish and the Nikon 90-day warranty so I know I can deal directly with Nikon.
I had shopped for quite a while for the best price and this was the best I was able to find - other than a brief flash sale, "while supplies last", on Adorama for about $90 less. Those available supplies disappeared before I could get one in my cart! Before and since, I have found no better price than the $479 I paid for the body plus both lenses.
