5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome entry-level DSLR camera!
Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2019
To be honest, the only reason why I bought this was because all modern digital cameras lack the manual control functionalities of the camera. Nowadays, everything is "automatically" managed by the computer within the camera which, in most cases, ruins the pictures.

I am so glad that I made the switch to this camera! It does everything that my other cameras does not do! It allows me to manually adjust the focus, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and so much more!

I will admit that the camera can be a bit "much" to those who are new to the DSLR universe, but I will say that after you play with the camera for a while, you will know all of the menus, options and their locations like a pro!

What I love about this camera is that you have the ability to switch out the stock lens for a macro lens (those insane close up photos) or for a telephoto lens (for those far distant pictures) if you choose! For me, personally, the stock lens does more than enough, but if I have the urge to buy one of the other lenses, I can do that because the camera is made for expand-ability!

Contrary to what others may say, personally, I believe that the JPEG images are super clean and crisp. While you are not supposed to use JPEGs for post-production, I believe you can get away with some minor post with these files. They are so clean with no visible JPEG compression artifacts! It's a shame that the NEF RAW format is not widely supported, but once it is, I would switch over as soon as possible to get all the color information you need from your photos!

A little notice to new consumers: When you turn off your camera, disable the WIFI on your camera. I accidentally left the WIFI on and forgot about it. The camera, while in the "OFF" position, can still use WIFI, which will drain your battery quickly. But, on a full charge, if WIFI is turned off and dependent on your usage of the camera, the battery can last quite some time!

All in all, I think that this camera is a steal for it's price! For those who want to experience a DSLR camera without breaking the bank, I will definitely get this camera before they're all gone!

(I took 2 pictures of the camera, one with a more practical use of the camera, to show off the color reproduction. I took a photo of the grass in my backyard. The colors in that picture could not have been any closer to reality than it is in the photo! The second picture is a test to push the "macro" aspect of the stock lens to it's limits. It's a closeup of my TV, where you can see the subpixel elements. For me, it's a good-enough macro lens, but if I want to see the solder holding the pixels together, I have that option if I think the macro lens is a good investment!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Best camera out there for beginners IMHO
Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2021
The d3500 is smaller, lighter and has a considerably longer battery life in comparison to the d3400. The controls are completely on the right side of the camera, which some larger-handed folks have mentioned as a down-side, however with the new redesigned grip I find it advantageous to be able to change the settings with one hand (I also have banana-hands). When taking continuous shots there is a bit of a longer buffer time, however this does correlate with the card being used so paired with a faster memory card say, a SanDisk extreme pro, you're in a much better position. For an entry level camera such as this one, you're actually able to pump up the ISO quite a bit before seeing that digital noise, which is impressive. The ISO shortcut has been removed on the d3500 from the d3400, but that's a minor issue for me. Low light photography lacked the brilliant colors seen with the naked eye, however a super quick tune up with the camera raw filter in photoshop and that was easily amended. Honestly the only thing that really chaps my ass is the removal of remote photography. I've ended up using the remote photography feature on the Nikon Snapbridge app for my phone (using bluetooth), however if you'd rather not deal with that fuss you can always select a timer. Pair this bad boy with a Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.8G and boom, awesome intro set up for portrait photography. Love it! (just fyi all of these photos were taken with the kit lens f/3.5-5.6 18-55mm)

3.0 out of 5 stars Was sent wrong charger/unable to test batteries. Camera in decent condition.
Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2023
Pretty decent quality with it being used, a little scratched up on the screen but nothing too deep and doesn't interfere with anything. Overall camera was good but the charger was switched out for the wrong type (for whatever reason the charger disconnects so someone switched it for a type that doesnt work with the EN-EL14A batteries the D3500 uses) as well as the batteries being a bit scratched up, can't tell if they even work as they're dead and the charger is wrong. Luckily bought extra batteries, no time to send it all back before trip.

As it was a used, reconditioned item, I took it to an accredited camera shop and the owner checked it out completely. He said the previous owner took excellent care of it, and that I got a very good price point for the condition of the camera.

This is the right DSLR for beginners. If you learn some basic techniques you can click amazing shots with D3500. I got a well packaged camera in two days for decent Rs. 26500.( cheaper than dealer’s price) When combined with Capture NXD free download, Power of RAW files can be put to use. 18-55 mm lens is not a great one, but is a good starting point. Having learnt some basics I miss the ability of the camera to shoot at high aperture. Unfortunately the kit lens does not go beyond f/5.6 in M mode ( and I look forward to add a f/2.8 prime 50 mm soon). However lenses can be purchased for a bargain from dealers directly.
After theee months of usage : Have shot some awesome images with silhoutte. As I learnt more about photography I realise it’s 70 % of how you use the camera settings and the rest is about the lens.

It was my first DSLR! Was really excited for the first month but gradually I lost my interest and now it's just there lying in the corner of no use! Not saying it's bad, the product infact is really good but once I have got enough pictures from it now I don't understand what's the point of it,
It just takes pictures (that are obviously good) I can't carry around this bulky thing everywhere I go instead I would have got and iPhone with a great portable camera or I would have got a device like iPad for productivity or better yet I would have invested such amount in index fund :)
