Expert Review Summary

DPReview Silver Award
June 2015
If you're specifically after a DSLR and you mainly want to shoot stills, then the D7200 is an obvious choice: its controls, class-leading image quality and excellent AF tracking make it quick and enjoyable to use, and stand-out features such as its low-light AF ability, Active D-Lighting, and Wi-Fi just go to seal the deal.

Expert Reviews

Richard Butler Richard Butler Camera Expert
The D7200 offers a series of small improvements over its predecessor but they're likely to make a big difference to a lot of users. It's not the smallest camera in its class or the best option for video but impressive autofocus, well-designed controls and class-leading image quality make for a formidable combination.
Samuel Spencer Samuel Spencer Camera Expert
The Nikon D7200 continues the D7000-series' tradition of wonderful image quality in a less expensive format, with all the right incremental improvements over the D7100 in terms of AF and sensor performance.
Rishi Sanyal Rishi Sanyal Camera Expert
The Nikon D7200 fixes the major complaints we had of its predecessor, offering a much larger buffer for continuous shooting, and banding-free shadows for class leading dynamic range.

Reasons to buy

  • Best-in-class image quality: As of June 2015 the D7200 has the best image quality of any APS-C camera on the market. Its straight-out-of-the-camera JPEGs look great and the sensor captures an impressive amount of dynamic range.
  • Impressive autofocus system: The D7200's autofocus system has 51 points spread across a wide area of the frame. These points are sensitive to -3EV, allowing for focusing in very low light. We were also impressed with how well the camera tracked a moving subject when shooting with the optical viewfinder.
  • Very good ergonomics and user experience: In addition to its solid, weather-sealed body, the control placement on the D7200 is top-notch and its interface is well designed for such a complex camera.
  • Excellent battery life: The D7200 can take up to 1110 shots per charge - way more than both mirrorless cameras and its DSLR peers.

Things to consider

  • No aperture control when recording video or using live view: The D7200 requires you to exit live view whenever you want to adjust the aperture, which is especially inconvenient when recording video.
  • Quirky live view autofocus: For stills, focusing in live view is rather slow and tends to 'hunt' to confirm focus, which is acceptable for still life but not for moving subjects or video.
  • Basic Wi-Fi feature set: While NFC makes pairing the camera with a compatible smartphone easy, the Wireless Mobile Utility app itself is very limited in terms of functionality and is unreliable on Android devices at time of publication.

Focus on challenging situations

Whether you're capturing images in daylight or after dusk, the D7200's superb AF system will keep up.
