• Great depth of field (blurry background)
• Live view option is available to look at screen for picture taking
To emphasize, this camera has fantastic capabilities as a beginner/intermediate DSLR. Attached are images that were captured using the 18-55mm at various distances from the subject to show the image quality. It has terrific depth of field when focused on a subject at a close distance.
This Nikon D3300 is suitable for portraits, landscape, and fast motion objects. It is not only useful for beginner photography, but also videography. Nikon D3300 takes high quality indoor and outdoor videos. Although zooming causes noise in the video, it still captures clear imagery in detail with excellent depth of field. Nikon D3300 has wifi capability to cater towards their users’ immediate needs. The wifi adapter has to be purchased separately. It is a convenient device to have available for when you want to share that perfect image instantly.
The Nikon D3300 is an entry-level DSLR, so it has all the key functions as a point and shoot camera, with some additions:
• ISO up to 12,800
• Higher shutter speed
• Retouch menu that allows the user to edit the photo on the camera
• More dial options: night portrait, manual, and exposure mode selectors
The Nikon D3300 is an outstanding, reliable entry-level camera that contains all basic features necessary to help develop your photography skills. It is a purchase you won’t regret!
The LCD is a fixed display which is fine with me. I’m not buying a DSLR for selfies. Plus I’m really just an old dude and don’t care about selfies anyway :-D I didn’t care for the viewfinder focus setup, with just a few very difficult to see focus points. I confess though that I wear trifocals, and so those with younger eyes may not have the same issue.
However, having said that, it was otherwise an excellent camera and I particularly like the LCD interface, which gives lots of options for customizing. It presents 3 “dials” on screen for ISO, aperture and shutter, as though you were using manual controls. Very nice.
In spite of the focus issue, build quality I found to be very good and wish that this one had worked as expected. But Amazon made it good. While I was waiting, I did more research and talked with several people (retired pro photographers in jewelry, studio and also food) and they all recommended a Canon, which I bought.
Comparing the two, I like that the Nikon has a door for the input connectors, rather than a sort of plug that the Canon uses. Also, the SD card for the Nikon is on the side rather than the bottom, which I also prefer. On the other hand, the Nikon is noticeably slower to switch from viewfinder to LCD display, and the display has an annoying habit of turning off rather quickly (and finding the setting to change this eluded me).
So overall, had the camera focused as expected, I’d have kept it. But because it didn’t I ended up with the Canon which I’m going to review later after having used it for a time.
The largest con that I have is that there is no wireless built in, but one can be bought separately and it comes built-in with higher-end models. On a brighter note, the camera is a good size and is easy to hold. I don't think you can go wrong with this camera as an introduction.
