Expert Review Summary

DPReview Gold Award
May 2016
The D810 offers medium format image quality at ISO 64, and more than enough resolution for almost any application. Its well thought-out ergonomics, build and speed make it as versatile in the field as in the studio. We do have some reservations: mirror slap can be an issue with some VR lenses, and the electronic 1st curtain implementation is limited. We also wish focus were more reliable in low light, but these do not detract unduly from the quality of the total package.

The D810 is Nikon's flagship high-resolution DSLR, and two years since its introduction, it still represents a performance benchmark for cameras in this class. Features like 3D AF tracking, market-leading dynamic range at ISO 64 and a tough, weather-resistant body make the D810 a fantastic all-rounder.
Rishi Sanyal Rishi Sanyal Camera Expert
With the market push for higher ISOs, it's fantastic to see a camera making gains on the opposite end: ISO 64 allows the D810 to capture as much light as medium format cameras, leading to unprecedented image quality and dynamic range, provided you can give the camera the extra light.
Wenmei Hill Wenmei Hill Camera Expert
Although the D810 suffers a bit in low light focusing, the combination of superb image quality, accurate 3D tracking, and intuitive controls makes it an excellent camera for nearly all shooting situations. It is my go-to when I need reliably sharp images, and its impressive Raws free me up from worrying about noise performance and dynamic range, allowing me to focus on the photograph rather than the camera.

Reasons to buy

  • Industry-leading dynamic range: The D810 offers class-leading dynamic range and low noise performance at ISO 64, rivaling medium-format cameras.
  • Sharp images: Lack of AA filter and the redesigned mirror helps keep image sharp. An electronic 1st curtain, though awkward to use, guarantees sharp shots.
  • Excellent subject-tracking and face detection: The D810's 3D AF tracking is capable of superb accuracy, capable of following a subject as specific as an eye around the frame.
  • Large buffer, fast response: A large buffer allows you to shoot 32 continuous 14-bit compressed Raws without a drop in burst rate. The D810 is also very responsive: despite its large 36MP files, you can check focus at 100% after firing a shot instantly.
  • High speed shooting: The D810 can shoot at frame rates of 5 fps at full resolution and 7 fps in DX crop mode with battery grip, making it useful for moderately-paced sports and action photography.

Things to consider

  • AF can struggle in low light: The D810's autofocus system can hunt, or simply miss focus in low light, where competitors - and predecessors - do not.
  • Mirror/shutter vibrations can cause blur: At telephoto focal lengths, use of slower shutter speeds can result in image blur due to mirror and shutter vibration. It can get worse with certain lenses when VR engaged. While the new electronic shutter helps, it's not available outside of Mup mode, nor can it be combined with short mirror delays, so is only useful for tripod work.
  • High ISO & JPEG performance not best-in-class: Although the D810 is unmatched at ISO 64, high ISO performance and JPEG image quality lags slightly behind the best of its competitors.
  • Slow AF in live view: Focusing in live view and movie mode is very slow, to the point where it's unusable for capturing video.
