From the Manufacturer
Shoot in the dimmest lighting conditions without a flash or softly blur the backgrounds of your photos and videos with the first f/1.8 lens in the 1 NIKKOR lineup. Create photos and videos that mimic what you see with your eyes—both in perspective and brightness. From casual snapshots to creative close-ups, every image will be true to your memory of the moment.
So many spectacular views appear when the light is fading—dramatic sunsets, the final inning of play, an evening stroll in the city or a warm moment around a campfire. The 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 lets you capture those low-light moments exactly as you see them. Its ultra-wide f/1.8 aperture delivers remarkably bright photos and videos with beautifully blurred backgrounds (what the pros call bokeh) and its 18.5mm fixed focal length (equivalent to a 50mm lens in 35mm format) mimics what we see with our eyes. From casual snapshots to creative close-ups, every image will be true to your memory of the moment.
Master low light and depth of field
The fastest lens in the 1 NIKKOR lineup
The speed of a lens describes its maximum aperture—the larger the aperture, the more light it lets in and, therefore, the faster the lens. At f/1.8, the 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 is the fastest lens in the 1 NIKKOR lineup. This speed opens up new opportunities for low-light and high-speed shooting so you can capture brilliant shots while the light is waning. But that's not all. When shooting at f/1.8, your photos and videos have extremely shallow depth of field—your subject will be in perfect focus, but its background will be softly blurred. Use that effect to create flattering portraits, to draw attention to a particular area in your shots and much more.
Take a closer look
Focus as close as 8.4-inches from your subject
Combine 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8's speed and depth of field control with an enhanced close focusing capability (just 8.4-inches), and you can get more creative than ever. Change your perspective—get close to a flower blossom for a stunning macro-style shot. Set your aperture to f/1.8, then bring the flower petals into crystal-clear focus while the surroundings fade into a soft, beautifully blurred texture. The 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 gives you creative freedom from any distance.
Expand your creativity
Build a versatile lens system
1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 is the sixth lens in our growing 1 NIKKOR lineup and an excellent addition to every photographers bag. As a second lens, it gives you enhanced low-light, a fast f/1.8 aperture and close-up shooting capabilities. Pair it with the 1 NIKKOR VR 30-110mm, and cover a broad focal length range: from standard to telephoto. With each new lens you add to your bag, you'll find exciting new ways to express your creativity.
AS stands for Aspherical lens elements. This type of lens utilizes non-spherical surfaces on either one or both sides of the glass in order to eliminate certain types of lens aberration.

It's the same story when it comes to full dSLRs. The body can only take the system so far, and only processes the light formed and given to it by the lens. If you are stepping up from a point and shoot for the interchangeable lenses, don't waste your money turning the nikon 1 system back into a point and shoot/superzoom with a Nikon 1 NIKKOR 10-100mm f/4.0-5.6 VR (Black)lens. GET THE PRIMES and your photography will flourish. Trust me, throw this on and play with aperture priority well past what the zooms allow you to go and you'll start getting the look you think of when it comes to higher level cameras in lighting situations you couldn't before with out the low apertures.
Do not despair at first! I had a little trouble learning how to use this lens. It has a huge aperture range, and offers so much control to the photographer. I finally set up a tiny still life in my dwelling, hooked my V1 to a large flat panel, and experimented with the various focus modes and apertures. This lens can autofocus very accurately to 6 inches or so. The matrix method of focusing sometimes selects the wrong object, and the spot focus is better then.
the lens hood is super expensive, so just think of it as part of the original cost of the lens. It snaps on securely, keeps stray light out, and protects the outer lens element without adding much bulk. It never needs to be removed, as the lens cap fits right onto it.
One needs to download and install the newest free dng converter from adobe's site to use the lens profiles for this insanely sharp little thing. Without those profiles, the raw images have both vignetting and distortion. The newest camera raw download did not include this profile and I failed to figure out any other way to get single lens profiles.
In summary, i recommend that you add this lens to your bag, even if you already have the 10 mm pancake. Order the lens hood as well to get the full functionality. Ignore the fairly loud focusing and aperture sounds. Practice a bit with the amazing aperture range, and learn how to quickly move the single focus point around the screen when needed.
Things I like about this lens:
1. Gives great shallow DoF and nice Bokeh
2. It's not very expensive
3. It's not very big
4. It's very light
5. Low light performance is very good
6. Very good optically
7. Focal length is equal to what we see with our eyes
I had the 10mm/f2.8 lens and sold it in order to buy this one. I didn't find as much benefit from the wide angle lens as I do with this one. YMMV, but the 18.5mm is a very easy to work with distance.
