Optically, this is an amazing piece. I also have the 24mm 1.4G and 85 1.4G which are all equally as impressive, but I find this 35mm focal length to be much more useful as an "everyday" lens. 35mm on a full frame body can pass as wide angle for landscapes and architecture as well as a portrait lens. And because of its close focus ability, it serves as a semi-macro lens as well with about .2X magnification and close focusing to about 1 foot. Background defocus is also more pronounced than the 24mm due to the focal length, and bokeh is almost as beautiful as the 85 1.4G. I've used it on a D700 and now on a D800 and when I pixel peep the 36 megapixel file, I'm even more amazed at how sharp this lens is. It's tack sharp wide open at f/1.4, which was not something I expected, so much so that any increase in sharpness when stopped down was only really noticeable near the edges upon close inspection. Perhaps Nikon designed the optical formula to be this way? If so, I applaud them because if you're going to spend $1600 on a big and heavy fast prime lens, you'd want to shoot it wide open, otherwise there's no point in carrying the extra bulk.

I'm such a sucker for prime lenses that I've amassed a large of collection of Leica M primes, Zeiss, Voigtlander, Nikon, and Canon primes from new to older classics. This 35mm has to be up there among my top 5. The only sharper 35mm I've used is the latest version of the Leica M Summilux, but dare I say even that might not be as sharp wide as Nikon's at f/1.4. And this 35mm is certainly in the same class as the sharpness king in my collection: the Zeiss 100mm Makro-Planar ZF.2. But it's not about sharpness that makes this lens great. It's about usability.

I've had this lens now for a couple of months, and have had ample time to get used to its characteristics, its strengths, and (unfortunately) its weaknesses. Here are some main points from my ownership experience, which has been largely positive:

-- Chromatic aberrations are very pronounced with this lens (purple and green fringing along high-contrast edges). Nikon has for one reason or another decided not to put ED (extra-low dispersion) glass in the 35/1.4G to correct for CAs, though they saw fit to put this exotic glass in the comparably-priced and superiorly-performing 24/1.4G. The View NX2 software that Nikon provides with its camera bodies is rather good at removing this kind of CA, but two things spring to mind regarding this issue:

a) If i spend $1800USD on a lens of new design, I shouldn't have to correct for CAs this extreme. My Canon 35/1.4L, introduced in 1998 and costing some $600USD less than the Nikon 35/1.4G, did not exhibit such extreme CAs (though in fairness it did exhibit some CAs, as all wide fast primes will).
b) I (and a great many others) don't normally use Nikon proprietary software for our RAW conversions (e.g., Lightroom, Photoshop, etc.), and these programs (especially LR3) have proven themselves to be less than effective at removing much of the purple/green fringing that this lens (and others) produce. Thus, to remove it, we have to introduce an extra, and potentially time consuming, step to our processing methods.

-- Focusing with this lens can be a noisy and erratic process. ((UPDATE 6/18/11: A few months into using this lens, I have found that keeping my D700 in AI servo AF mode has dramatically increased my keeper rate.

I'm a wedding photographer who shoots in dark conditions often. This lens performs great in these conditions. I use this lens on a D3 body and the AF is good. It doesn't seem to be as fast at my zooms (24-70 2.8 or 70-200 2.8) but it's still pretty accurate when focusing in low light. The image quality is AMAZING. Certainly an upgrade from the older 35 f/2 version . Images has more contrast & are sharper. I also own the 24 1.4 G and I would say that the IQ on the 35 is about the same. Over all, I'm very impressed and satisfied with this 35. [...]

I was looking for something a little wider than a 50mm lens with the ability to get a short depth of field. It doesn't get any better than this. I'm finding the lens very effective for photographing toddlers in their element. Since they don't sit still very long, this lens just allows you to follow the action and get a sense of place in the image. It's certainly not cheap, but the lens has such a beautiful quality, a look you don't see everyday.

I owned the Sigma 35 "Art" lens, and while it was nice and sharp, I am glad I replaced it with the Nikon version, as I greatly prefer how Nikon lenses render the out of focus areas of the picture. For me it's just a smoother, better, more pleasing to the eye feel, (yes, I realize this is all subjective), and I think it's worth paying more for the Nikon lens (if you can afford it.)

I've used this mainly as a landscape lens so far...and so far I've been impressed. Extremely clear and sharp when stopped down to f/2.8 or lower (typically I'm shooting at 8 or 11). When shooting wide open, you may see some purple fringing (chromatic aberration), some gentle light falloff from center to corners, and some minor vignetting. However, each of these issues is quite minimal and barely noticeable to all but the most strict pixel peepers. Additionally, color fringing, vignetting, and light falloff are all correctible in post. These issues are gone after a stop down or two.

The lens requires 67mm size filters...a ubiquitous enough size to find pretty much any type of filter you need (i.e. polarizer, ND filter, etc...). I have used multiple polarizers and ND filters, and the lens worked seamlessly with them. I've also used the Lee filter system with this lens, and it also worked to perfection.

Auto focus is, as expected, fast and quiet. Even in low light, focus was very accurate...almost surprisingly so.

The clarity and color distribution is fantastic. The only other 35mm lenses I've used often are the Zeiss f/2 and f/1.4 versions, and I much prefer the Nikon 35mm 1.4 because of how crisply it handles bright contrasts...especially horizons along a sunrise or sunset. Shooting this lens wide open will truly "pop" the subject out from a background of creamy bokeh. To sum it all up, It's the best lens I've ever used in the 35-50mm focal range.

The lens is nicely balanced, perfect for photojournalism or as a "walk-around" lens while hiking or traveling. Although not a light lens by any means, it's not so front-heavy as to cause any balance issues on a tripod.

I'd recommend this lens to anyone who wants a fantastically clear and crisp, fast lens.
