The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR Lens is a telephoto lens that is compatible with both FX and DX-sized image sensors. This lens features a rugged magnesium alloy barrel construction that provides durability and strength that are suitable for its use with wildlife, nature, and sports shooting applications. The lens construction integrates two fluorite lens elements to help reduce the overall weight of the lens while also offering chromatic aberration-reduction benefits. Also aiding in the reduction of chromatic aberration is the inclusion of two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements that furthermore provide an increase in image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity. A Nano Crystal Coat is applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections and ghosting for greater image clarity and contrast. Built-in Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to lessen the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops, which greatly benefits this lens'' use in low-light conditions and fast-paced photography. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates. The AF-S Teleconverter TC800-1.25E ED is also included with the lens to further extend the effective focal length to 1000mm f/7.1. This teleconverter incorporates an ED element into its design to maintain the high image quality achieved by the lens alone. Additionally, the electromagnetic aperture control is fully supported when the teleconverter is in use.
From the Manufacturer
A marvel of optical design: the groundbreaking 800mm prime.
Introducing one of the most impressive feats of NIKKOR engineering yet—the remarkable full frame AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR. Offering sports, news and wildlife photographers the pinnacle of reach and performance, it combines advanced NIKKOR optics and lens technology within a dust- and water-resistant magnesium-alloy body. With Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) providing ultra-fast, ultra-quiet autofocusing, lightweight fluorite lens elements improving optical performance and handling, Vibration Reduction enabling faster handheld shooting* and an electromagnetic diaphragm for consistent exposures during high-speed bursts, the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR sets a new standard for super-telephoto lenses. And with the included AF-S Teleconverter TC800-1.25E ED, you can increase overall focal length to a whopping 1000mm (1500mm equivalent on DX-format cameras). Conquer distance like never before.
*Based on CIPA Standard
Go the distance
800mm super-telephoto power plus an included 1.25x teleconverter
As the longest lens in the NIKKOR lineup, the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR delivers an astounding 800mm (1200mm equivalent on DX-format cameras) of super-telephoto reach with a fast f/5.6 maximum aperture in a rugged, well-balanced design. But for even greater reach, the lens includes a matched 1.25x teleconverter (TC 800-1.25E). This high-performance 1.25x teleconverter has an Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element for superior sharpness and color correction, and it increases the lens' overall focal length to 1000mm (1500mm equivalent on DX-format cameras).
Superb optical performance
Superior NIKKOR optics for exceptional results
The AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is a marvel of NIKKOR optical design. The lens is comprised of 20 elements split into 13 lens groups. The front and second elements are fluorite (a lightweight mono-crystal optical material), which provides superior optical characteristics and reduced weight for balanced handling. Two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements provide superior sharpness and color correction by minimizing chromatic aberration, and Nano Crystal Coat (N) reduces ghosting and lens flare throughout the visible spectrum.
Advanced lens technology
Silent Wave Motor, Vibration Reduction and an electromagenetic diaphragm
The AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is an advanced lens for advanced D-SLRs. Autofocus is powered by Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which uses ultrasonic vibrations—instead of a gear system—for ultra-fast, ultra-quiet, ultra-precise focusing. It also allows you to seamlessly override the AF system with no time lag. Nikon's second generation Vibration Reduction enables handheld shooting at up to 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible (Based on CIPA Standard)—a huge advantage when the lighting is less than ideal. And for maintaining consistent exposures during high-speed continuous shooting, the lens uses a highly precise 9-blade electromagnetic diaphragm that produces outstanding bokeh under the shallow depth-of-field necessary for separating subjects from the background during peak action photography.

The big downside, other than the obviously high pricetag, is that it is a bit heavy to carry into the field, but this is nothing that a bit of planning can't mediate. A minor downside is that with such a long lens, some moving subjects will be too close to fit into the frame from time to time.
I would advise anyone seriously considering this lens to just go for it and don't look back.
Let me be honest here. I don't own this lens. I feel very few private individuals do. However, I've had the opportunity to play with one as well as make comparisons to Nikon's other supertelephotos.
As soon as I had access to this lens, I mounted it onto a Nikon D4 16.2 MP CMOS FX Digital SLR with Full 1080p HD Video (Body Only) and tried shooting birds in the parking lot. To my disbelief, the autofocus was, in a word, sluggish. It was almost unusable, running like a fat kid in gym class. Was this lens broken? Was my camera? My D4's never had issues with other lenses before... As it turns out, both were functionally fine. Nikon has released a special firmware update for compatibility with this lens. After installing the update, the AF speed was fantastic; it might as well have been mind control.
Comparing the 800mm and the previous Nikon champ Nikon 600mm f/4.0G ED VR II AF-S SWM Super Telephoto Lens for Nikon FX and DX Format Digital SLR naked, I couldn't make out a sharpness advantage. This isn't to say that the 800mm is bad, rather that the 600mm is already so good. With a 1.4x teleconverter, bringing the 600mm to an equivalent 840mm, it was clear that the 800mm was the superior lens at that focal length. Using the included 1.25x teleconverter, the 800mm was quite simply the sharpest 1000mm lens I've ever used. There was absolutely no comparison to the 600mm with the 1.7x teleconverter. Of course, for the price, it had better be flawless.
Physically, the lens is a bit longer than the 600mm, but it's also much thinner. The size advantage of the 600 is negated once you add the hoods, however, as the 800mm has a single piece hood as opposed to the 600mm's two stage. This is because the 800mm is thinner, so the hood needs to extend out less. At over 10 pounds, you won't be handholding this lens for long, regardless of the VR it has. It is interesting to note though that this lens, due to the fluorinated lens elements, is much less front heavy than many other supertelephotos.
In the end, I've decided that this isn't a lens to buy. To rent on special occasions? Definitely. This powerhouse of a lens performs like no other. But it's also the price of a car and too specialized for me to own. Your mileage may, of course, vary.
Can you image buying a ver expensive lens and not being able to get an essential spare part?
And let's not even talk about how it makes you look alike a straight up G, i even got arrested once when i tried to photograph the president and secret service though i was a sniper. #straightuppantydropper
Here is a picture of a cat i took when i was on top of the Eiffel tower, the cat was all the way in Rome.
