I like this screen a lot. By rights it should have probably shipped as the default with the D3. It took me about 5-10 minutes to install this just going by some rough instructions on the internet. It's not too complicated to figure out, which I like. (Just mind the dust!)

The reason I bought this, though, was because I was lead to believe it would be easier to focus my lenses manually than the default screen, especially in darkly lit rooms. And so far, I'm not really getting that. If there's an advantage it's pretty slim.

But it works well, the grid lines are a welcomed bonus, and don't interfere at all. The red square still lights up red and brightly in the viewfinder to help me see what I'm focusing on -- nothing is taken away with this screen; more is added in a very unobtrusive way.

The one criticism everyone seems to give is that the grid lines don't light up like they did in the D200/D300. And I wish they did, but hey, they still function and they're useful.

In summary, I like it and I feel it was worth the cost even though it doesn't really serve me the way I'd hoped.

PROS: Helps with composition, unobtrusive grid lines, easy to install, not a big investment

CONS: Doesn't really help with manual focusing, grid lines don't light up

I finally dropped down the new E focusing screen for the grid and it perfectly worked just fine. I just wondered why Nikon left this out in the new D3....anyhow, this is working just fine! To all D3 owners, the procedure is so simple you should not hold it just because of the fear!! Just go a head and do it!

The Type E focusing screen is great for landscape or architectural shooting because it has gridlines that help you get horizons or building lines level in your images. The only reason I don't give this screen 5 stars is that on the Nikon D3 series cameras, the focusing points take up so much space in the frame that the gridlines don't cover enough of the frame to be as useful as on earlier generations of Nikon cameras. Nevertheless, it still does a good job, and I'd rather have the higher number of focusing points than not. I think Nikon would be wise to just build on-demand virtual gridlines into all of their camera rather than use focusing screens, but lacking that, this focusing screen will do an adequate job for you and is worth the $30.

I like to use this type of screen. Better for architecture and precision type of photography.
