I bought the Nikon TC-14E to extend my Nikkor 70-200mm f4. This lens is very sharp, producing quality images at 100% crop when mounted to my 36mpx D810, but I wanted a bit more reach. Before I bought, I read several online reviews which suggested the TC-14E III softens the image somewhat.

I take online reviews with a grain of salt until I test in real-life conditions. To test the TC-14E, I set up a Siemens star target outdoors at a distance of 75 feet, a comparable real-life distance for my wildlife shots. With my camera mounted to a stable tripod, with VR off, I compared the sharpest picture at 200mm, with the sharpest using the TC-14E at 280mm (1.4X). I find the TC-14E does an excellent job increasing the reach of the lens, with very minimal image degradation. In fact, when you compare details from the actual (unsharpened) photographs below at 500% magnification, you see little difference at maximum resolution (blue), only slightly less contrast within maximum working resolution, ie the green circle. Moreover, the image is usable; a slight sharpening will remove the discrepancies in contrast and detail.

I consider the Nikon TC-14E a bargain for what it does: extends the reach of an already sharp lens close to a 300mm. The results are really excellent in terms of detail and contrast, with minimal chromatic aberration.

Apparently Yes!! A replacement for myversion II for my 400mm FL lens.
I noticed the difference immediately with superior sharpness, clarity, and contrast.
Quote me as saying;
" the best lens accessory for extending your reach without image loss" I have ever used.

See example shots at: Truetoad.com - 400mm 2.8E lens

Keep in mind: These only fit Nikon Lens that accept the "special" flange for coupling, visit the compatibility listing on the NikonUSA site.

I shoot action mostly at Equine events where I'm anywhere from 25 to 100 yards away from the subject. I use a Nikon D4S with a 70-200 f2.8 lens. When I started using the Nikon Teleconverter TC-14E III, I had two improvements: longer reach to capture the subject with only one f stop loss. Additionally due to the compatibility of the camera and lens combination I had full auto focus capability. I've had other Teleconverters but this one gave me the best results. Attached are some photo using the Nikon TC-14E III.
I definitely recommend this item for those who shoot distant subjects still and in motion.

After a week of use, I am pleasantly surprised at the sharpness with a Nikon 80-400VR. Results with previous teleconverters were disappointing to me a few years ago. The one stop exposure loss is a small price to pay for the extra reach and all camera functions work perfectly, so far. This combination probably can't compete with a 200-400 or 600, but for a fraction of the cost it is producing some very good results. The lighter weight and smaller size makes this a setup ideal for wildlife hiking and it has done well on an architectural shoot. Design and build quality appear excellent.

Even the latest Nikon teleconverter 14E III is not perfect.
If you don't mind losing a full stop and softer photos then it will get you the extra reach.
However after testing on my Nikon 200-500, I found the the degree of softness was just not worth it. That said I only shoot wildlife, birds. I'll take a sharp photo over a closer soft one every time.

One of these I use dedicated to a D7100 and my 70-200 f4. And another ordered here on Amazon to be dedicated to my second D7100 with my Nikon 300mm. Experience shows me no degradation to image with either lens. But I am not a Pro with any kind of portfolio. This is pure photo enthusiast impression. And reviews by pros in the know back me up. Otherwise I would never had bought these. I have yet to use it on my new D810 but I will edit my review here as soon as I do.
