You don't need to mess with all the network settings in the app - you can if you like, but it is not necessary. The trick to get a reliable connection is to put your iPhone into airplane mode (thereby eliminating all forms of potential network interference) and then enable ONLY the wifi connection to the camera. Do this and everything will work just fine. When you are done, simply disable airplane mode and all your original settings will be in place again and you can go on your merry way.
As for all the other network settings in the app:
Renaming the network is probably smart if you don't want to advertise that you have an expensive Nikon in the vicinity. Password protecting the network may be overkill, but it can't hurt. You really don't need to touch anything else.
I haven't tried using the "take photos" feature from the app, so I can't comment on how good or bad that is--I have a timer and a remote thing that I use instead. Don't you love how knowledgeable I am about proper terminology?
Anyway, for the download function alone, I've had pretty good success using this little device while I work within the parameters above.
I found out my wireless remote was bad and then this item suddenly synced with the app on my phone. It's working great!!! I purchased a second working Nikon wireless remote even though you can use the app with your phone to not only use but take pictures. Be sure to go to your settings on the iphone and switch the wifi to the Nikon. Also you must push on the tiny button until you get the right amount of flashing lights to get the connection to sync up properly.
I will probably only use this to view pictures and possibly send a few pics to my phone when on location. The wifi sucks my phone battery and I have not figured out how to make the Nikon wifi a secure connection.
I will be using this during an upcoming wedding shoot so if I have anymore tips or issues I will add to this review.
And... it's slow. The data rates for transferring 15 -20 pictures are "grab a coffee", not wait 2 minutes.
