2 Super ED and 6 ED glass elements reduce axial chromatic aberration. Nano Crystal Coat and ARNEO coat cut through glare and lens flare. Color bleeding and focus breathing are virtually nonexistent.
Effortless autofocus.

Autofocus is split between two near-silent stepping motors moving in sync. The design enables thrilling close focusing, edge-to-edge sharpness and virtually no color bleeding or focus breathing.

With ultra-quiet focusing, suppressed focus breathing, smooth aperture adjustments, a constant center of gravity and S-Line image quality, this lens shines in video applications.

Optical VR keeps you steady.

Utilizes Synchro VR

On a Z camera with Synchro VR, the lens’ optical VR system works with the camera's in-body VR for up to 5.5 stops* of compensation. On a full-frame Z camera, it achieves up to 5.5 stops* of compensation. And on a camera with an APS-C/DX format image sensor, it stabilizes with 2-axis optical VR.

*Based on CIPA Standard; in NORMAL mode; this value is achieved when attached to a mirrorless camera equipped with a 35mm film size image sensor, and when zoom is set to the maximum telephoto position.
Inner Balance Technology keeps you centered.

Easier handheld shooting

As you zoom in and fully extend the NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S, weight-dispersing Inner Balance Technology maintains a constant center of gravity (within just 3.8mm). The effect is almost baffling—the lens gets longer, yet there's no perceptible change in its balance. That means easier handheld shooting and no nose dives on gimbals and tripods.

Macro-style close focusing.

Traditional super telephotos can overpower close shooting situations. Not the NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S. Even when you're right in front of your subject—as close as 2.46 feet away at 100mm or 3.22 feet away at 400mm—you can fill the frame with macro-style details.

Won't creep.

An innovative design enhancement eliminates lens creep—without torque or tension adjustments. Whether the lens is pointed straight up or straight down, the barrel will stay in the same zoom position.

Quick zoom ring.

Cover the entire zoom range—from 100mm to fully extended 400mm—with less than a quarter turn of the smooth zoom ring and no perceptible change in balance. This is comfortable, intuitive handling at its best.

Loves the great outdoors.

All moving parts of the lens barrel are carefully weather sealed, and the lens mount has a rubber gasket. Nikon's proprietary Fluorine coat is applied to the front-most element, which repels dust, oil and water droplets and easily wipes clean.

Tons of reviews out there detailing IQ. Having a 400/4.5, I didn't think I would keep this lens. This is now my goto hiking lens. Coupled with. a 24-70 I'm covered for almost anything. Add a Canon 500D and close up work is straightforward. Very nice lens!! Doesn't replace the 400/4.5 though but when you need a zoom, you just need a zoom. Handier than a 70-200 + 1.4TC, though that combo is really nice too, just long and a bit heavy. IQ is much better than my 70-200 + 2.0TC.

Whether you take Moon shots or wildlife or anything else, this lens is a must have. Paired with a TC 2.0 teleconverter and getting a 200-800mm lens by only losing 2 stops (so going to f/9). Has two useful rings, one for focus and one for the aperture change, display on top (OLED) and two Fn buttons. Really amazed at the details and clarity you get with this lens. Took a hand held shot at 400mm @ 1/60 without issues.
