About the Author
Lynne Matson grew up in Georgia and spent her summers at the beach. She attended the University of Florida, where she met her husband and became a total believer in love-at-first-sight. Now, Lynne is mom to four amazing boys, has a house full of surfboards, and has developed mad Nerf skills that she never imagined. A former attorney, Lynne now spends her days making up stories that involve twists in this world, creepy islands, and near miss-kisses. Cookies are her kryptonite, especially Thin Mints.

My favorite character in this book was Thad. I thought he was well balanced. He is a good amount of light and dark. I found him to be believable and flawed. My favorite part of Thad is his sense of loyalty and responsibility on the island. He has so much knowledge and shares it. He gives every one the benefit of the doubt. I just fell in love with him and glad that he shared his point of view.
My second favorite character was Nil. It may be an island but it was a major player in this book and probably the series. I'm thinking it is a she but she is a beautiful, dark, mysterious, and unforgiving mistress. I want to go there but I also want to leave at the same time. Oh man is she a handful. I look forward to learning more about her further in the series.
I will recommend this series to all of my ya loving friends because it is great.
There are two point-of-view characters in this book. Charley is a 17 Year Old southern girl from a town outside Atlanta, Georgia. She's tall, plays volleyball, and managed to survive alone on Nil for almost two weeks before discovering she wasn't the only human on the island.
Thad is a 17 Year Old boy from British Columbia, Canada. Before arriving on Nil he was a competitive snowboarder, but now he's the leader of the ragtag gathering of teenagers who work together to escape the island.
The atmosphere Matson presents lets you know that literally anything can happen on Nil at any time. The characters learn to live in the moment and enjoy the good things while they last, but there's always the threat of dangerous elements in the island, less than trustworthy teammates, and the ever ticking clock. Nil had me constantly wondering what would happen next. I couldn't put it down!

- The plot of this book was different and original enough for me to try. I ended up liking the plot after reading this book.
- The author's world building and writing made it such a 5 star book in my opinion.
- I love Thad! He is the perfect character in my opinion. I liked his POV's more than Charley.
- The mystery of the island
When it comes to the mystery of the island, Matson does a fantastic job of setting up the understanding that there are certain rules which must come into play on NIL – e.g. just how the island residents arrive there in the first place, and how (and when) they can leave – but doesn’t spend too much time unnecessarily dwelling on how or why the island came into being in the first place. The details that she does choose to share, along with the things that remain unexplained, maintains the fine balance that good mysteries.
- I found some of the book to unbelievable and unexplained. The author never gave a reason why Nil existed to hold these teenagers.
- Some times I found the book to be a little slow for my taste.
- The whole thing with the stealing from the shack or store. It was never fully explained.
C. Overall: Even though, I found that i had a lot of emotions going through this book, mainly love and hate, I found i was blown away by it. I do caution those who are going to be reading this book, there is a insta-love with Thad and Charley. If you don't like that, then i would use caution or just don't read it at all. I enjoyed the book and i found it was a great summer read.
- Do I recommend this book? Yes.
- Do I think the book is worth the price? Yes.
"The Cove. Beautiful water as clear as glass, cascading into a black rock pool as cold as ice. Trees with deep green leaves the color of lush magnolias, kissing an Easter egg blue sky, lime green moss clinging to life on damp charcoal rock that will never burn."
"To stay. To be with Charley, a girl I didn’t know but wanted to—more than I’d wanted anything in months. For the first time since my feet hit Nil dirt, there was something I wanted more than leaving: time. Time without limits, time to get to know the girl who made me feel alive again." ~ Thad
