Nila works as a carpenter with Will Jamison - her tall, blond, and awfully handsome co-worker and friend. Just as Will and Nila begin to become aware of each other and of the intensifying attraction between them, Nila is covertly threatened by her vengeful ex-boyfriend. Because those sinister promises were also directed to her cherished friends if she talks, Nila feels she has to hold the existent terror close to her chest to protect them all.
Pastor Dave and his wife Lydia, with whom Nila is boarding with, are wonderful and wise encouragers in Nila’s life, but will they be able to protect Nila from her dangerous secret? And can they help her rise above her perceived unworthiness, and difficulties with forgiveness? Will Jamison is suspicious of being shadowed, and of Nila’s changing moods, but how can he reach her heart to get her to trust not only him with her burdens, but also God?
While this novel had me on the edge of my seat with trepidation, and in tears for Nila’s harrowing life, it’s also beautifully uplifting and inspirational in reading about the victories emerging from Nila’s emotional and spiritual struggles. This is a remarkably well-written, page-turning story that shimmers with romance, love, forgiveness and hope! Highly recommended!
Nila is attracted to Will on the first page—“Nila gazed up at the tall, blond man standing just a few feet away. His deep-set blue eyes met hers, and the world shrank to just the two of them.” Yet before the end of the chapter, her former abusive boyfriend is released from jail to terrorize her. Throughout the book she not only fears for her life, but the life of her friends as well.
Pastor Dave and his wife Lydia are the epitome of Christian love. They provide her with shelter and minister to Nila in her new found faith. Words of wisdom from these godly characters include, “God is her greatest protector. He only wants the best for her.” They help her grow in her faith and self-confidence. And who could forget Will’s niece, Jessica, calling him Hunky Unky.
Friesen has created memorable characters and a story that keeps you wanting to turn the page and find out what happens next.
