"woof woof *wags tail* (sits to play) woof! <gives paw> (waiting for treats)"!!!!
This wooden puzzle is nice & sturdy, and while I can't speak for the plastic version, this seems easy to clean and tough enough for a strong pup. Baxter quickly went through the progression of learning this puzzle (in one sitting), from keeping the trays slightly open on the first try to putting in the "locks" and figuring out "casino"!
Whenever I take the puzzle out (even the FIRST time) Baxter knew it was a toy for him. This is a great way to engage your dog, and I recommended it to a dog friend in rehab (another golden post-ACL surgery who can't run around for a few weeks) as good intellectual stimulation, which tires dogs out.
Baxter could play this all night. It does need constant supervision, as he'll go a little nuts trying to pull out the trays if he's not watched. And he would chew chew chew it if I let him. But it is great fun to watch the dog figure it out. YES it is expensive, which is the biggest downside. If you're handy with wood & construction, you could probably figure out ways to re-construct some of these Nina Ottosson toys. But for the rest of us... a nice investment.
None of my local dog stores (including specialty stores) sell Nina Ottosson toys (or had even heard of them!!!), so I had to buy online. If you go to her website, you'll see that the number of US dealers is limited. As a result, it is hard to see one in person before you purchase. But read the recommendations and decide. If you're tired of spending money on $3 squeaky toys that just get ripped to shreds in an hour, you may want to sit down and bond with your dog (or cat) with this lifelong game!

The pressed wood didn't hold up to slobber & scratching, so I painted it in acrylic.
The pegs are too low to the main board so my dogs don't seem to see them. Read more
