not a love story at all.

I like the memoir of the writer, Elizabeth McNeill. very unusual read. It is not a love story for those of you out there considering buying it . Its more of a sad story about a regular mid 30s woman living in NYC and a guy whom you think is kinda ok, but quickly it turns dark. I think the story is based on true events in her life that happened to her for a couple months of her life, but this strange relationship messed with her finally she had enough and ended it. My personal opinion is that it could easily happen to anyone looking for love, but ending up with the wrong person. Not a happy story at all. just want to be clear about that. thank you.

Movie 9 1/2 weeks is loosely based on this memoir

The 70s/80's era was a different world than now. The author wrote about her experience with a man who subtly but increasingly exerted his influence, manipulation and control over her. We can be thankful the movie did not exactly depict her experience. Female readers will most likely understand the attraction as well as the emotional difficulty with extricating ourselves from this type of relationship. The writer conveys her anticipation, excitement and dread in such a way that we can almost imagine ourselves in her shoes. In our current climate surrounding relationships, I don't think anyone would [or should] stay in a relationship like this for one week, let alone 9 1/2. I imagine this book would be an interesting read for a group of good friends to review and discuss - and that would include men.

Forget Fifty Shades!

"Fifty Shades of Grey maybe the most popular book through out the world but this book is the true Fifty Shades of real Grey (the color not the person). It is not a love story where a dark man with troubled past is healed by the love of an innocent woman or the innocent woman gives herself willingly and complaints about it later in the book. It's about a woman who tells the story about how she meets a man but never gives a name or a full description which is a great way to keep things a mystery. Each chapter you don't know what he is going to do to her, one day he cuffs her to a bed post and leaves her there for hours, next he physically hypnotizes her, then he dresses her as a man they go to a hotel where he rapes her the way a man would rape another man. Its about how high will you let passion take you?"

The quality of the book was fine, so this is not to impugn the seller.

But I was appalled at the relationship in this book. The kinky things were pretty meh, but the fact that this is based off of actual diaries left me incredibly disturbed and disappointed. 1/10 do not recommend if you're in the mood for a romantic book.

Seriously Boring

This is disappointingly boring. It is missing emotions big time. Too clinical and too much telling instead of showing. Compared to novels with dark, twisted themes and bdsm stories these days, this can't hold a candle. I expected so much more. Probably a rare case of where the movie is better than the book.

I do love that it was an autobiographical memoir

This was an intense read that took me on a bit of an emotional roller coaster. I do love that it was an autobiographical memoir. It was interesting to see a domestic side of bdsm. However as hot as some of the encounters were it also serves as a bit of a cautionary tale about unstable/unhealthy relationships and power dynamics. I'm glad I finally was able to read the book. It will be a nice addition to my library.

I read this book in 1981, and I was totally struck by the story. After reading it, and I learned what "50 Shades of Grey" was about,
I wondered how silly this new novelist was because "Grey" seemed to be covering the same territory over 30 years later.
