Poor Rotten Ralph. His health just isn't what it used to be. Thanks to his rotten ways, he's down to the very last of his nine lives! One more slip and he'll be gone forever, warns the vet. Sarah, Ralph's doting owner, is fiercely determined to keep her cat safe. But how much coddling can Ralph take before he has to do something totally and utterly rotten? In this ninth tale about the most delightfully disobedient cat in town, being naughty has never looked so good to Rotten Ralph. But then again, after a hard day's rotten work, neither does the warmth and safety of Sarah's lap!
A Look Inside The Nine Lives of Rotten Ralph
After a night on the town, Rotten Ralph seems so pale and sickly that Sarah takes him to the vet, who proclaims that he’s used up eight of his nine lives. Shaken by the diagnosis, Sarah begins treating her beloved cat like a baby. Coddling doesn’t suit Ralph, though, and soon he’s out gallivanting again. From the long-running Rotten Ralph picture-book series, this darkly amusing story features flashbacks to eight catastrophic encounters (Ralph’s reminiscences of his past lives). Deadpan storytelling and brightly colored, somewhat zany ink-and-wash artwork combine for a decidedly droll and sometimes hilarious picture book. Grades K-3. --Carolyn Phelan

In this work, the story begins with Ralph as he woke up after a night of being truly rotten with a group of his ally cat friends and finds he is not feeling so well. After looking in the mirror he is shocked to find he looks somewhat like a ghost; pale and just not right. Of course he goes directly to his best friend, a little girl with whom he lives with, by he name of Sally. Sally is distressed and takes Ralph directly to the Vets where it is discovered that Rotten Ralph has used up eight of his nine lives; used them up being a rotten cat!
Of course his "owner" Sally begins the nursing process immediately. How will all this work out? Can Rotten Ralph change his ways? Can Sally protect Ralph from Ralph?
I am rather fond of all the work Jack Gantos has given us over the years but must admit that the Rotten Ralph books are special to me. There is something about the matter of fact way the author writes and the rather dead-pan yet lively illustrations by Nicole Rubel that I find tremendously amusing.
The most important thing about books for children though is weather or not children actually like them! I can tell you from personal experience, having read to hundreds of children over the years that kids love these books. This work being reviewed is no exception. They are a wonderful group read and you will find the little ones leafing through this book and others in the series simply looking at the quirky illustrations.
Jack Gantos has dozens and dozens of children's books to his credit and upon last check, the illustrator, Nicole Rubel has over 60. These two make a great team!
For those interested, the author has written an autobiography, "Hole in my Live," which gives some interesting insights. Gantos has lead an interesting life.
Great book and I highly recommend it.
