5.0 out of 5 stars The story of a courageous woman who turned her life around under difficult situations
By doris gallan on November 12, 2019
While many people find themselves at a point in their lives when they must undertake a transition, few have to do it under the trying conditions a person finds themselves in when living abroad. Thailand provides the interesting backdrop for this story, but also some of the challenges the author must cope with such as:
- living with culture shock and language barriers;
- functioning in a massive and noisy city that never stops;
- keeping her wits about her as long-term relationship ends while new ones begin;
- and working in a poisoned environment that makes her reconsider her life-long career.
Bazant's descriptive style of writing brings the reader to the scene, captivates the heart and mind, and doesn't let go until the end. The author’s emotions are raw as she works through many misconceptions: life as an expat isn't as easy and glamorous as people think, working in international schools isn't the privilege we're led to believe, and even a long-time marriage isn't safe from destruction in the wrong conditions.
Readers interested in life transformations will learn a lot from both the narrative and the list of lessons learned that ends the chapters. Anyone wanting to live abroad or coping with this situation might come away with a better sense of what challenges might be involved and how to cope with these.
