The author is from the UK, and I was drawn immediately to the fun lingo and vocabulary. It definitely does not deter the storyline in any way, only enhances it. The heroine, Emma, was simply amazing. I found her possessing many of my own traits, including the love of books and music. She has an alluring personality but like most us, has insecurities. I found her vulnerability her best quality.
Jake, oh Jake. Honestly, I disliked him for a large portion of this book. He could be such a jerk. However, somewhere in the midst of the story, my heart began to soften just a little, and I found myself liking him more and more. He's the bad boy you want to save, or want Emma to save.
In addition to the strong main characters and storyline, there is an amazing supporting cast. I fell hopelessly in love with Liam. There is so much we have yet to learn about him, and I am so hopeful we see more of his in additional books. Emma's father is another pivotal character. Their relationship was touching and honest.
I am the Queen of Cliffhangers and trust me, this one is a brutal one. I wasn't sure if I wanted to throw my kindle or hug Ms. Carter. I won't spoil it other than to say; it is brilliant!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to any NA fan. The book is beautiful, and the storyline flows so well. There are just enough twists to keep you guessing, but not feeling frustrated. It is definitely not conventional. I am counting down the weeks until the next installment.
Emma Campbell is only 19 and just about to explore the world and spread her wings. She believes she is ordinary, nothing special. All through her young life she has felt unwanted and unloved. A single tragedy early on in her past has wreaked havoc and caused rifts in her family. Since then she has tried desperately to forget those memories that drowns her in its cloud of darkness.
Jake Fox, the uber sexy hero of Nineteen, only wants one thing in life - to be an actor. He doesn’t get entangled romantically and makes sure that all such attachments stay light and casual. He is what anyone would call a good time guy, he bangs them and then leaves them. He spends considerable energy and time to do the bed hopping tango without the emotional connection.
Then one day, while he is waiting to conquer one of his conquests, he sees Emma at his brother’s night club. He feels the zing of electricity course through his body and didn’t know what to make of it. He was enthralled by this young woman and she was pulling all of his senses into overdrive.
What ensues is not a typical love story but an epic roller-coaster ride. As the evening progressed, Jake becomes more and more fascinated by Emma and seeing Jake’s attention elsewhere his conquest of the night becomes jealous and makes a move on him. Thus this incident becomes the catalyst in the following dominos collapsing one after one, shattering the evening for everyone.
The evening that changed everything for Emma and Jake left one party completely lost and the other feeling guilty. One had no idea, while the other was drowning in a sea of what ifs. But this wasn’t the only blow waiting to explode in your face. When Emma moves away and starts a new life and encounters some of the same people and new experiences, she finds herself unable to forget something. She has this feeling that something is missing. As Emma tries tentatively to open herself up for new possibilities, she finds out the truth about the night she first met Jake.
Jake in the meantime has been forcing himself to forget Emma and move onto his new life as an actor. His dream is finally coming true but fame and the exposure that he had once craved pales in comparison for his feelings for Emma. When they meet again, sparks fly and they come together to explore their feelings. Just when I was happy and getting all cozy to get my HEA. ES Carter decides to bash me in the head with a sledgehammer and paralyze my senses with fear. I was left screaming a big, fat, NO!
If you wanna know what happens to Emma and Jake, whether these two will end up together after all, 1-click Nineteen and find out.
This story felt real. It wasn’t rushed. The dialog was natural, just as you would hear it in a real conversation. The characters took plenty of time to determine their feelings for one another. I personally love the agonizing feeling of two characters that are meant to be, that keep having sudden misses along the way. It was quite interesting how Emma and Jake (the two protagonists), met by chance, and never met again until nearly the end of the novel. However, through other characters and events, their stories remained neatly woven together, giving the reader hope that they would someday be reunited. I won’t give anything away, but I loved how the author kept Jake tied to Emma for the first several months. It was fun, fresh, and I’ve never seen it done before.
This was a fun summer read. Jakes “hotness factor” was off the charts, Emma’s unassuming nature was adorable, and the supporting characters were very likable (in fact I’d like to see Liam, or Nate and Liv get their own books). Needless to say, it was a romance novel. There was plenty of angst, passion, and adrenaline. Ultimately, this tale was left unresolved, and I’m excited to continue the story with the second novel, Twenty one. Congratulations to author ES Carter on her debut novel. It was a great start to your new series.
