This excellent read is the first in a series of six about Nicholas Linnear, a half-Oriental and half-Western man well versed in many martial arts. Through present-day plots and flashbacks to post-war Japan through the eyes of Nicholas's father Colonel Dennis Linnear, watch as the story unfolds. Nicholas is torn up over a Japanese woman he knew as a younger man and his present-day girlfriend Justine who is being hunted down by a ninja assassin. But who is behind the ninja's actions? How does Justine's father's company Tomkin Industries fit in, and what is the secret behind several ritual killings in New York? This book also introduces Nicholas Linnear's friend Detective Lew Croaker, who, in a related subplot, is investigating the murders. And to top it all, some explicit sex and stunning martial arts action scenes! The part where Nicholas hunts the ninja down through New York, is one of the best action and suspense scenes in literature ever. If you are new to Eric Lustbader, read this one first and then read the rest of the Linnear chronology in order, and I guarantee you'll become addicted to him! Awesome.

Ok, Ninja stories are passe now, and so 80's. I'm sure Ninja is to the 80's what the vampire is to the 90's. But you should really read this book. The story is rich, the dialogue is fantastic and the action is beyond compare. The Ninja is entertaining all the way through, and it's well worth the price of admission.

The Ninja by Eric Van Lustbader is one of my favorite novels. I first read it back back in 1983 when I was a senior in High School. I am not really a very fast reader, as I usually like pronounce the words out in my head while I am reading, but I was able to read this book in record time. It is so suspensful that you will not want to stop reading it. This is Eric Van Lustbader's first novel with main character Nicholas Linnear. If you read it you will most certainly want to read his other novels about Nicholas Linnear.

Eric Van Lustbader's "The Ninja" has all the trappings of a cinematic thriller: a fast-moving plot, a villain skilled in the deadliest martial arts, suspenseful encounters, a narrative fuelled by passion and revenge, lashings of sex and spellbinding action scenes. Although it is regarded as a popular book, which is to say, "a good read" on account of its standard storyline and characterisation, its sophisticated language, with choice descriptions and refined diction, elevate to the altogether higher plane of literature.

This book is a really great reading for anyone interested in martial arts or Orient in general. The novel is action-packed, fast-paced and complex. This is the first time I read a book where ninjutsu was presented in real enough and complex terms. Although the scenes of sex and violence were vividly described, I believe they only added to the power of the novel.

I was talking to a friend recently who lives on Long Island. She mentioned Dune Road & I recalled the first murder in the book takes place outside a house on Dune Road.
Eric Lustbader writes a masterful first chapter of the kind I rarely see any more except from top selling fiction writers.
The opening chapter is heavy with imagery & atmosphere ....
and the entire book should be read with Musashi's Book of Five Rings close at hand.
As a Kindle owner: I really wish this book had been in ebook format. I have no idea why it is not.
And I wish I'd searched harder for a used HARDBACK edition as since the book is quite long... in paperback, being spoiled by an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite... where I can adjust font size, line/margins and screen definition....
Attempting to read this in paperback... reminds me how challenging that can be.
Still... the book itself... anyone interested in Martial Arts... will find this one of the best martial arts mystery thrillers ever written.
If I were Eric Van Lustbader, I'd be rioting to re-introduce it to America via the ebook revolution.
Don't even remember where I was living when I read it originally... just that for a time I was transfixed by a new and exotic and amazing world of action, philosophy, culture, language... via Van Lustbader's writing in this book.
I highly recommend it! Upon Re-READING... I have found that it holds up beautifully to my memory of it...
and that has not always been the case!

The Ninja combines the mystique of Japan with the modern day murder. This is also the introduction of Nicholas Linnear a product of both of these worlds. Nicholas has tried to avoid his past and wants to just find a new life. That all changes when Nicholas is faced with a mysterious murder and his friends call him to consult on a theory. Then soon after his friends start to turn up dead. This leads him to a confrontation with his past.

This is a fast paced novel and it is really enjoyable.

I was first introduced too the Linnear novels while locked up. Surprisingly, some prisons have very good libraries because this one had practically all Lustbaders books. I don't think I stopped reading this book unless I was eating or sleeping. I was constantly captivated by his descriptions and metaphors he used to lay out feelings and violence from the characters. While I was in there, I vowed that I would pick up every single Linnear novel this man had written, and I am now three books in. I believe there is nothing written like this series, and will be nothing like it after.
