I bought my kids several of these sets for Christmas and was nervous because of the negative reviews on this site. We have assembled the Starting Line set so far, and here are my thoughts...many of them in response to other comments I have read:

1. The track is very easy to assemble and has stayed put--even without the little connectors that are included to lock things in place.

2. The directions are very clear--the pieces that are necessary for each step are shown brighter in color, and then once that step has been completed, the colors are faded so that you know those pieces are in place and you don't make the mistake of hunting for them again.

3. The cars go very fast and are extremely sturdy...but there are 2 construction mistakes that might be made that could hurt their performance.
First--the plastic fronts of the cars actually lock into place and if you don't make sure they are locked, the front of the car can fall off. This makes for some awesome crashes, but is not how the cars are meant to be.
Second--there are 2 types of wheel and if you put them in the wrong place, the car will go in circles or drive poorly. Check that wheel placement!

4. It took my son about forty five minutes to build the track and it has stayed exactly as he built it for a few days now...and several races later.

My son wants me to add to the review that if you miss anything (a piece, a step in the instructions) it won't work at all, so you do have to be careful and read through the instructions slowly. For example: he missed a step on the Thwomps the first time through and then they were very unstable, but assembled correctly, they are great. I bashed on them every 3 seconds for a few races and they stayed put.

Gave this to my 6 year old son for his birthday. When I opened the box and looked at the plastic bag of jumbled parts and the directions, a wave of dread swept over me. Unlike Legos, K'nex are not separated into bags by component piece. You get 2 large plastic bags with everything thrown in. That being said, do not let that dissuade you from buying this fun toy. If your child loves Mario, he/she will love this.

It did take us the better part of an hour to put together. The assembly is too difficult for a child. There are a lot of details. But it was worth every minute of trouble. This set is a blast! The motorized battery operated cars really fly. I was impressed with how fast they go. Sometimes, it's frustrating how parts of the cars will come undone. They're easily repaired with help from a nearby older sibling.

Don't buy this as a construction project for the little ones. Buy this for the super fast racing and laughs for your Mario Kart fans.

There is no way that a six year old could assemble this product. The instructions were incomplete and confusing. Pictures showed different colors than the real pieces. My grandson has no problem putting together 8+ lego sets, but he lost interest immediately in putting this together. He did, however, enjoy the Luigi and Mario battery operated cars, even though the pieces kept falling off. It took me 3 hours to "construct" the entire set and the cars wouldn't even stay on the track. He had more fun racing the cars on the floor, however, with new batteries they were fast and denting my baseboards....so we took them outside (without the track). He put up barriers to keep the cars in a confined space and that was quite fun. I have no idea if they sell the cars individually, but the Starting Line Building Set is a waste of money.

it's kind of a boring thing. My son had a blast putting it together, but once it's together the excitement wears off fast and you have this big thing laying around...however, my son had a ball putting it together and we can always Goodwill it for the next kid looking to put something together, play with it a few times etc

I'm not a Lego or K'nex fan, but this is great and sturdy track set if you take the time to put all the pieces together correctly. The instruction is unclear and a bit challenge for those prefer reading instruction, but a visual individual can just follow the pictures shown on each step and picture on the box. The tracks are pretty much easy and fast to put together, but it took up most of my time trying to figured the the pieces for the Thwomps. Overall, it took me about 2 1/2 hrs to build this track simply because I purposely took my time to avoid making mistake, but still easier and faster compare to K'Nex roller coaster. It is all worth it because this things is super fast and fun to watch, especially watching the excitement of my 5 years old son....priceless. The track does seems to stay pretty good the first day, but kept falling apart after many uses. I finally realized that I forgot to use the little connectors (28 pieces of red and 26 gray)that are included to lock the tracks in place. After that, the tracks no longer fall apart, but once in a while the cars fall off the track and run across the floor to the other room which I find it hallarious. Looks at those real race car drivers, they're fall off the track, they crash, so they're not perfect either.

My suggestion to those who considering this track set is don't let those negative reviewers stop you from buying this toy. It is a really great track set if you only take to the time to set it correctly. But if you want something that can put together right away or something for your average 5-6 years old to set it on their own, this is not the toy.
