Enter the Wii Classic Controller. I cannot imagine a better controller for these old games! I know you can buy replica USB controllers that look like 8- and 16-bit controllers but they lack analog stick(s) for N64 games. I jumped at the chance to order this adapter online. I was a little worried at the reviews stating that there are driver issues, incompatibility issues with Windows 7 64-bit, etc. But it's cheap enough that I figured it was worth a chance, and I could always return it if it didn't work out.
I just plugged it in a couple hours ago. Never downloaded any drivers, nor installed any from the mini CD that comes with it. Just plugged it in, let Windows do its own thing, and voila! Two different platforms (8 and 16) work fantastic. The feel of the Wii Classic Controller for these old games in spot on. I'm buying another one, as well as another Wii Classic Controller Pro to put in closet in case anything happens to mine. Getting both for roughly thirty bucks is cheaper than many USB game pads and this combo works and feels a million times better.
If you're tired of USB gamepads and/or current-gen console pads not quite cutting it for retro games, get this. Even if you have to buy a Wii Classic Controller to go with it, it's worth it and you won't look back.

After some more time un=installing and re-installing the drivers* I was able to get this thing to work but after 10 or so minutes of brutally slow gameplay my PC gave me the classic blue screen of death error message!! My notebook's specs are as follows: Compaq Presario CQ56 notebook PC. Inside is a 64-bit Intel Celeron processor running at 2.20 GHz with 2 GB of RAM all running Windows 7 as the OS. It may be that this product simply is not friends with this type of computer because I've read many great reviews that eventually led me to purchase this accessory. Unfortunately I have had zero luck with it. I have even sent Mayflash's entire staff an e-mail concerning my experiences and have not heard back from them in over two weeks! I am sorry to bring down the customer satisfaction rating of what otherwise appears to be a quality product, but I have to let everyone that might be thinking of purchasing this thing to consider my experience and think twice.
*I have heard some fellow gamers suggest that I shouldn't install the drivers for this accessory as they are not required for "Plug and Play" gameplay that is the convention when most gamepads are plugged into any modern PC and they might be the source of my troubles, but if I fail to install them I get a little notification on my task bar that reads "cannot detect USB device"...The PC will not even detect this product if I don't install the drivers.
- It isn't recognized by the old USB standard (it only worked with USB 2.0 ports).
- For the best configuration, the included drivers must be installed (Windows XP).
When I got this device, I tested it without the drivers and was satisfied until I noticed some of my games did not work well (or at all) with the d-pad, while other games did. There is a built-in function for switching between d-pad configurations, but it just wasn't doing what I expected it to. The driver disc (included) solved the problem. It was easy to install. Then I just opened the control panel window from my start menu, and underneath "Game Controllers" the option was available for this device. I clicked on "properties" and I could see a button at the bottom for "Controller Mode" where I pressed it and selected "Digital" from the list and finally pressed OK. Next, I found the tab at the top of the window labeled "Button Re-mapping" which has the option to switch the analog sticks around (Axis Remap). By changing "Left X" and "Left Y" for "Right X" and "Right Y" -- I successfully created the configuration I wanted. Yes, it was kind of a pain to figure this out but at least I won't have to switch between d-pad configurations anymore, and it works well with all of my games.
