It's not all sunshine and roses, though. The switch to micro-SD for storage is a bit inconvenient, necessitating a screwdriver and some patience. I do recommend maxing out the capacity to 32 gigs. Also, regarding the lack of a charger cable, I have four words for any prospective buyers, as well as those complaining mightily about not having said cable:
Read. Before. You. Buy.
Seriously, a little research on your end, a peek at the description and any fine print--that will save you trouble down the road.
The only real complaint I have isn't with the game unit--it's with the sellers. If you're paying more than $200 for this--as good as it is--you're paying too much. If you can get it at that price point, have at it.
Before I purchased this, I had the release edition of the 3ds xl. The main differences between them are:
- cartridges load on the bottom with the new one, previously loaded on the upper edge. Not a major change
- if you use a controller enclosure like me, be aware that NONE OF YOUR PREVIOUS ACCESSORIES WILL FIT!!!!
- Comes with a 4GB Micro SD card installed. Its a pain to get to as its now under the battery. If you do a lot of purchasing on the e-store, plan on an upgrade almost immediately. This unit is compatible with 32gb MicroSD cards maximum.
- eye tracking 3d finally works right! I have been able to play mario kart 7 with the 3d on.
All in all, I am thrilled with this system. My whole family now owns one. Its gonna be a fun Christmas morning!
It comes preinstalled with Super Mario World which is actually a huge plus for us because it's one less game to get lost or damaged and even though we have the game, you can only have 3 save files on it, there's 4 people in our family that play it so that helps a lot! It was a nice perk though that wasn't the reason we picked this particular system.
He really loves this and can take it anywhere with him since it's so small and portable. I prefer he brings this places instead of his iPad because for one it's cheaper, but it's also less likely to get broken or damaged. I bought him a case at a local store to hold it as well as his games and the cord.
I'm giving it 4 stars because for some really stupid reason, the 3DS XL systems do NOT come with cords. I remember older Game Boy systems could use batteries OR a charging cord, so they didn't come with the cords, which makes sense. My previous DSI XL came with a cord because there is no option to change the batteries, it's only a rechargeable lithium ion battery. I assumed the same went for this when. I bought the first 2 for my husband and I when we upgraded from the DSI XL systems and I assumed wrong, literally all that is in the box is the system, one stylus, and cards that you can use to play games with the system. The DSI XL came with 2 styluses and a stylus that was thick and looked like a pen. I'm not sure why they are including less now for more money but I guess that's the way it goes. Fortunately the charging cords that came with our DSI XL systems work with these systems so we didn't have to buy new ones, but we did have to buy 2 for the kids systems so we each have our own cord. I just can't believe for the price they don't include a cord, it's such a cheap part and you can probably get it for less than $10 when you catch it on sale on Amazon. I paid around $15 when I bought them for the kids.
Kinda lame though that it doesn't come with a Yoshi screen theme or Yoshi game, but oh well. I honestly can't tell which version of the screens I got in the lottery. Whatever they are, they seem perfectly fine. The 3D aspect seems OK, but it still hurts my eyes looking at it, so I'm not sure the changes they made really improved the 3D feature overall. I use it without 3D and it's great.
