All in all $20 isnt that much money, a 1/3 of how muchplaystation/xbox cost for online, but nintendo online lacks certain features that any paid service should consist of. Thats why i give this service 3 out of 5. In some areas its what youd expect, and in some areas its better than expected, but in many areas its very disappionting and not the quality tht id expect from nintendo.
This membership allows you to play games online with others. Up to this point, doing so has been free. It's understandable that Nintendo charges for such a service, as long as it works well. So far, playing games online with the service have worked great! I've spend some time playing Rocket League with others, and I have no complaints about how the online games work.
The membership also includes 20 old Nintendo (NES) games. Many of these games are games that I grew up playing, so it has been a lot of fun to play. My wife and I really enjoy playing the puzzle game Dr. Mario together, and I've introduced her to the old Mario games. Other feature games are The Legend of Zelda, Tecmo Bowl, and Excite Bike. Paying $20 for a year membership, I believe that this is a great deal to get to play these games again. However, with Nintendo's HUGE library of games, I think they've really missed an opportunity to add a ton more games and maybe charge a little bit more. I would be happy to pay maybe $35 for 100+ games from NES, SNES, and N64. Hopefully they will add more games in the future.
Overall, I'm happy with this great service. However, I believe Nintendo could do even more with this. If you played the NES back in the day and/or you like to play with friends online, this $20 membership is definitely worth the money!
Most importantly, this service lets you play your games online. Nintendo has a bunch of really great multiplayer titles such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, that are all amazingly fun to play online.
Another important aspect of the service is the ability to back up your game save data to the cloud. Not every game is compatible, but the vast majority of them are. It is really annoying that big games like Splatoon 2 and Pokemon Let's Go aren't eligible for save data backup though. I understand Nintendo's concern for cheating, but there are ways they could've worked around it without just restricting cloud saves for some games. Other than the few exceptions though, cloud saves are pretty spot-on.
The other two features the service comes with are neat, but not amazing. Buying the service gives you access to the Nintendo Switch Online app. The app doesn't do too much though. It lets you track your stats in a very small selection of games from your phone, or use voice chat in a kind of ridiculous way. As much as I dislike Fortnite, Nintendo should follow its example and use voice chat that runs on the console, instead of this weird system where you have to connect a phone. The other feature you get with this is a library of NES games to play on your Switch. Being a retro gamer, I really enjoy this feature. It's a lot more affordable to get an expanding library of NES games on my switch for 20 dollars a year than it is to buy that many games for the actual console used. The NES games are fun to play, but they don't hold lasting appeal. They're primitive compared to the modern games most people are used to, so they'll hold peoples attention only for a few moments. I think Nintendo really needs to add SNES games and above to the service, and then things would be a lot better. Typically, games made in the 16-bit generation and up tend to be more substantial attention-grabbers. Instead of arcade games, you have more things like racing games, RPGs, fighting games, large single-player adventures, etc. Things that are honestly a lot better.
So this service is good. For the price of 20 dollars a year, the notable features you get are online play, cloud saves, and a side of NES games. The app isn't really worth your time. This service has a long ways to go, but as long as I can at least play my online games and backup my saves for a really cheap price, this service works fine.
ETA - After using Nintendo Online for about 4 months, I maintain my one-star rating. We primarily use it for Splatoon 2 and connections get dropped constantly. Nintendo says it's my ISP, my ISP says it's Nintendo. Given that I don't have trouble with Steam games, Netflix, etc., I'm going to say it's Nintendo potato-grade online service.
But a few quality of life features like cloud saves being paywalled kinda sucks. Voice chat is a refractory experience if you intend to actually use.
I'm still gonna recommend it if you wanna use online, but it feels kinda late to be rolling this out.
