It was a pleasure to read a book that solidly straddles the line between fantasy and romance, delivering all the romantic warm fuzzies along with political intrigue, interesting magic, and meddling gods (love me some meddling gods).
Nirel has one of the best love triangle set-ups I've read in a while. Both Corvin and Jase have something to offer Nirel, and the political maneuvering (both above board and behind the scenes) add an extra layer of tension to the story. The sense of much bigger things going on creeps up on the reader, and even toward the end, that sense remains. As the beginning of a series, the knowledge that more depth and reveals about the magic and hidden powers is a big draw.
Epic fantasy fans (like me) may want more detail to the worldbuilding, but there is a good sense of depth to the story, and I expect more is coming in later books. This is a great debut and the series will only get better.
