1.0 out of 5 stars Lots of rice bugs before even unsealing it...
By Amazon Customer on January 16, 2018
Did not even open the bag but I saw rice bugs moving all over inside(a lot of brown thingy was moving inside the bag).

Seriously? I can see that bag is completely sealed. Meaning that the bug was already there.

Won't buy Nishiki rice for some time now since I might get another rice filled with bugs...

1.0 out of 5 stars Worms in sealed rice bags
By J. Day on October 26, 2020
We usually pick up our rice at the local supermarket, because of the pandemic my wife thought it was a better idea to subscribe/save via Amazon and reduce contact.

After we started the subscription, we didn't think that it had any issue. However, we have begun to notice there were worms in the rice. They would rise to the surface of the water as we rinse the rice. At first, we thought it was our containers that let the worms get in. We start to consider sealed container, rather than a plastic rice bin with just a plastic lid. In the meantime, we cleaned out our old bin to make sure it is totally clean without any bugs inside.

When I begin to pour in a new bag of rice, still perfectly sealed from the factory, I noticed a bug fell in. I stop and scoop out the rice and put it in at 12x12 class pan so I can have a closer look. I could not believe my own eyes when I saw three bugs in that little scoop of rice, then I saw the movement as the worms are trying to get away from the light. I thought maybe we got a bad batch, then proceed to open the second bag. Unfortunately, the second bag contains worms as well.

There is a number at the back of the rice, I assume that is the batch number for the factory to trace.

They are: 0640FL2 7:40 and 1470FL2 22:14

Nishiki if you are reading this review, please check your storage/bagging facilities. Both bags of rice were sealed, with no breakage or leakage.

We always liked Nishiki's rice but were very disappointed to see worms in the rice in multiple bags.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lucky me?
By Kay on October 31, 2017
I must just be either very lucky, or I simply don't keep rice around long enough to have a problem with bugs; my last purchase was August 4th and I'll re-order before Thanksgiving, so each bag lasts me around 3 1/2 months. I'm not sure if storage is the kicker, but I keep mine in a large clear mason jar with a twist on lid (like the ones they have for beverages, but without the spout at the bottom - I'll attach an image) and I keep it out on my counter top. Maybe the light prevents the bugs? I don't know, all I know is that I purchase this product a couple times each year and from the first cup of rice to the last it's always perfect...even when I put too much water in.

So, I'd recommend you get the rice when you need it, use it up within a couple months, store it in an airtight container, and avoid cool, dark places. However, if you plan on using it as a long term food storage option then you'll want to go the extra step and do Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers and protect your stash - the original bag is not ideal for long term.

For a few dollars LESS than I typically find it at the Asian market (45 minutes from my house) I get the extra benefit of having someone else cart this up the three flights of stairs to my front door. In my book that's winner winner, chicken rice dinner :)
