But when you step up into the higher price points, the brand starts getting both good and interesting. Indifferent to crappy plastic gets replaced by lots of steel. Finish becomes much nicer, design becomes much more conservative and traditional.
The Spencer line straddles the line between fashion and tradition. Some of the Spencers still carry over the wild color schemes of their plastic brethren but others like this black beauty are much more subdued.
The all black and the gun metal Spencers share a quiet, reserved and very masculine aura. The all black's exterior coating looks substantial and has held up well under normal use. The watch and band feel substantial on the wrist. The movement case is especially beefy. This makes the watch face stand out from the wrist drawing attention to the rest of the watch.
The watch lies well with the band draping around the wrist snugly if a little bit heavily. The band's workmanship is solid, using pins to adjust the sizing. The deployment clasp is a bit fiddly with the two button being small and hard to find. Once pressed, the clasp unfolds easily and re-secures well.
The watch is readable in good to moderate light but not in low light. The other issue the watch has is that the alarm is not very loud. It will work as a reminder but not as a way to wake up in the morning. The fact the alarm is digital is a nice touch. Still I wish Nixon had gone a little further on the digital side of the ledger. A day-date function would have been nice and perhaps a countdown timer too.Read more ›
If you want to try it on and see how it looks before you buy, go to a local Nordstrom. See if they can match the bottom line price (no sales tax - sorry California residents!)
