They were about as different as four American clergymen could be. George Lansing Fox (Methodist), wounded and decorated in World War I, loved his family and his Vermont congregation—yet he re-enlisted as soon as he heard about Pearl Harbor. Rabbi Alex Goode was an athlete, an intellectual, and an adoring new father—yet he too knew, the day Pearl Harbor was bombed, that he would serve. Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed), the son a famous radio evangelist, left for war begging his father to pray that he would never be a coward. Father John Washington (Catholic), a scrappy Irish street fighter, had dedicated himself to the church after a childhood brush with death. Chance brought the chaplains together at a Massachusetts training camp, but each was convinced that God had a reason for placing them together aboard the Dorchester.

The U.S. Army Transportation Service troopship Dorchester was torpedoed in the North Atlantic, 100 miles south of Greenland, on the night of February 3, 1943. As a former luxury liner, the ship went down quickly. Of the 900 passengers and crew, 597 were military personnel, and four of those men were the ship's chaplains—Methodist senior chaplain George Lansing Fox, rabbi Alexander Goode, Dutch Reformed minister Clark V. Poling and John P. Washington, a Roman Catholic priest. Each chaplain distributed life vests as the ship went down and then gave up their own when supply ran out. (There were approximately 200 survivors.) Former Washington Post correspondent Kurzman (Fatal Voyage) follows the men from their enlistments to that fateful night, detailing their families and travails along the way. The result is the fullest reckoning yet for the men who have become known as "The Four Immortal Chaplains," who have previously been commemorated by the U.S. Postal Service, with a stamp issued in their honor.

Ultimate courage.

Almost anyone can be trained to kill, but to save lives must come natural. The 4 Chaplains is an outstanding example of this.
They "Talked the Talk, and Walked the Walk".
What is so great is that these men were from different denominations , and met in the Army with the same desire to go into combat and help the soldiers.
If one reads the Medal Of Honor list most of these men were given the medal for saving lives.
The Chaplains are in this group, However, they were not in a combat area as such so did not receive the
MOH, but a new medal was struck for them.

The book goes into detail with interviews of survivors.
A good read for a young person.

If you know of a person who thinks they are tough, have them read about
the 4 Chaplains, "THEN", they will know what tough is..

I ordered this book for my father, whose brother died in WWII. The family was given almost no information at the time, but by piecing together details, my mother determined that he was almost certainly on a particular boat when it was sunk by the enemy. That fact was confirmed by this book, and it offered a lot of information that is offered only sketchily in other areas. We appreciate the author and the information he was able to provide families, as well as the story of the wonderful chaplains. My mother, an avid reader (particularly about WWII), said this was one of the best written histories on WWII that she has read.

For the history buff, this is one aspect of the war that not many people are aware of. These 4 brave men gave their lives for the safety of others just as their faith demands us all to do. These men even in death, gave strength to those men who were dumbfounded at the thought of having to jump into the freezing waters not knowing if they themselves would live to see tomorrow.

A must read just as the Five Sullivan Brothers story must be read to again show the devotion these brothers had to each other.

In telling stories from the past, the acts of heroes are often overstated and embellished. This can be particularly true of war stories. But there are times when facts cannot be refuted, and when heroes are truly as brave and selfless as they have been painted.

Dan Kurzman's telling of the story of The Four Chaplains who went down with the USAT Dorchester in World War II is backed by innumerable accounts of surviving witnesses. The four interfaith Army chaplains -- Protestant, Catholic and Jewish -- worked together to save countless lives after the troop ship carrying over 900 men was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the dark of a frigid night off the coast of Newfoundland. They calmed terrified men, tended to the wounded and, in the end, surrendered their own lives by taking off their life jackets and handing them to others.

The author's driving narrative account of this tragedy, which resulted in the loss of 672 men, interwoven with biographies of the four chaplains leading up to their moment of heroism, reads like the best of Jon Krakauer or Sebastian Junger. It is true-life nonfiction told within the compelling conventions of fiction. I was saddened to learn that Dan Kurzman himself died last December, yet glad that he lived long enough to tell this inspiring, and utterly true, story.

Excellent Story Teller of Real History

This book is about the sinking of the ship the USS Dorchester during World War II. My grandfather was one of the men who lost their lives when this ship sank. I was especially intriqued reading the back story of the four chaplains who went down with the ship. I found Dan Kurzman's written account to be historically acurate. More than that his story telling pulls the reader into the lives of the chaplains.I felt Dan Kurzman was very respectful when he wrote the actual account of the sinking with many of the men losing their lives. It seems he wrote that section knowing there are still living relatives of the men who died on the USS Dorchester. I found history of my grandfather that I did not previously know as a result of this book. Although my grandfather is not a character highlighted this book, I found the book to be an easy read because of the story telling skills of the author, bringing history alive.

Faith equals love

I just finished this today, and I can honestly say I was never so moved by a book before. It must have been an act of Providence that four men of different faiths, but who had a common goal of uniting mankind wound up serving on the same ship. They could not have served as well as they did, and taken such good care of their men had they given in to the religious tentions that existed then. It was also amazing the seflessness and courage they displayed, praying amongst them, helping to organize, and even gving up their own lifejackets and sealing their fate so that they could each save one more person, when they did that they were truly doing what God wants of people. It is a refreshing antedote to the bitter partinship that we see from people proclaiming to speak for god, but who are just pushing an agenda(and I am speaking to both sides). Also the courage of them men on the ship in surviving, and not giving up, was amazing. Needs to be introduced to a wider audience.
