No Home for Killers: A Thriller Kindle Edition

3.6 3.6 out of 5 stars 8,426 ratings

The chilling story of two conflicted sisters, their murdered brother, and the secrets a family hoped they’d never have to face.

The murder of jazz musician and social activist Markus Peña doesn’t come as a surprise to his estranged sisters. Melinda and Emily Peña know their controversial brother had enemies. After all, even they hadn’t spoken to Markus since their mother’s funeral two years ago.

Who killed Markus? Was it someone trying to keep his latest protest song from publication? Was it the powerful and secretive uncle of his ex-girlfriend Rebecca? Or was it one of the other women Markus had callously abandoned?

To unravel the truth, Melinda and Emily must first face their own demons. Melinda, a former social worker, suffers from PTSD—haunted by the people she failed to help and unable to maintain meaningful relationships. Emily also pushes people away—afraid she’ll get hurt and afraid they’ll find out she’s Three Strikes: a masked vigilante who violently punishes abusive men.

Markus wasn’t a good man, but he was family. And it’s up to his sisters to uncover his lifetime of lies and the truth of his death.

Haunting, gripping, and relevant, No Home for Killers explores the conflicts that tear families apart—and the tragedies that force them back together.

From the Publisher

A musician and a businessman, Markus Peña—the focus of E.A. Aymar’s new novel, No Home for Killers—shares a lot in common with my brother. Both rarely talk to their siblings. Both long for the fame that music can provide. And both have a habit of saying things that get them into trouble.

But while my brother is alive and well, Markus Peña is dead, and it’s up to his sisters to figure out what happened. One of them, Melinda, is a former social worker struggling with the truth of her brother’s life and fame.

Emily, on the other hand, is a rather violent—and effective—vigilante. And she will stop at nothing to punish the men who have abused women, harmed those weaker than them, and targeted her brother.

Part thriller and part family drama, E.A. Aymar’s latest book is proof that a novel can do it all—even inspire me to call my brother. Because, despite everything, family always runs deep.

Gripping from start to finish!
I really enjoyed this book, particularly the character of Emily, who I could have read a whole series about. She was kind of larger than life, wickedly funny, and jumped off the page for me. Aymar does a great job keeping the story moving and adding lots of twists and turns. Highly recommend (dog liked it too).

Murder mystery? Check. Thriller? Check. Buuuut, add in LOTS of graphic violence, a mountain of abuse, more death than expected (including in the characters’ pasts, but more than your typical murder mystery’s worth of death in the book’s current timeline as well), countless unhealthy relationships (EVERY SINGLE RELATIONSHIP in the story is dysfunctional. Siblings, parents, partners, employees…ALL of them!), an immature 20-something girl who says “verily” in regular conversation, a masked vigilante, alcoholism, s€x work, trafficking of all sorts, illegal activities, a little bit of hanky panky, very descriptive passages about music/singing, and unexpected similes sprinkled copiously throughout, and that’s “No Home For Killers.”

A few brief lines/conversations were fully in Spanish with no translation.

I’m not totally sure how I feel about this book. It was different than most other thrillers. The characters were well-developed, but all highly flawed. They made some stupid, dangerous decisions when there were easier, safer routes available. Not having a single “stable/normal” character OR relationship made it feel like it lacked an anchor of some sort. It definitely could have been shorter. The author delved into certain topics (like Rebecca’s relationship with music/singing, for example) quite deeply, much moreso than the story required. Two characters (a background character and one that was only mentioned by minor characters 2-3 times) had the same name! I thought I came up with a great twist ending when I thought they were the same person, but nothing came of it. Obviously in real life that would be totally normal, but I’ve never come across two same-named characters in the same novel before with no connection. The ending was definitely unexpected, from the reveal of the murderer/s, the motive/s, and the aftermath. I can’t place my finger on a specific negative, but something felt “off.” Maybe it was just that this book was very different from any I’ve read previously. I think it’s worth a read, especially if you’re into action-packed thrillers that deal with the darkest and dirtiest people and corners of the world.

The streets of Baltimore have not been kind to the Pena family, which consists of a father and his three children: a son and two daughters. Two years ago, Mrs. Pena died of an unspecified illness. Shortly before her death, the children scattered and pretended their father and siblings didn't exist.

Tragedy strikes, but will it bring the family together or tear them apart even further? This seat-of-the-pants thriller is full of twists and turns that you will never see coming, especially when it comes to the reason behind the long estrangement.

Soon, bodies start piling up, and the police are nowhere to be found. The remaining siblings are left to discover the secret behind the bodies.

For the most part, the characters are deftly injected under our skin, allowing us to feel their pain. When it is revealed what broke the family apart, I certainly did not agree with the children's decision to flee. One star deducted for that reason.

How each sibling reacts to the family dynamic proves that even siblings from intact families can be very different. The side characters, although deeply flawed, could be someone you know.

I've read this book twice since the beginning of the year. With so many new books coming out every day, it should come as no surprise that I highly recommend it.

It was so well written, inventive and mysterious. It was funny and it is not a funny story but the writing was really good. I loved the song lyrics added at the beginning of the chapters. The characters were very well represented. It is an extremely violent and graphic story. While some reviewers seemed to enjoy the ending I found it totally hokey plot twist. I think a longer book where the main character escapes and returns for revenge at a later time would have seemed more realistic. The death angels thing was too weird and unbelievable. But I thought the writing was superb so I’m upping it a star for that writing.

I bought it on Kindle after reading a NY Times review. I stopped reading at about chapter seven. Every person in the narrative seemed to be interesting when first introduced, but quickly became another cardboard victim, with no qualities that made me want to know more about them or spend more time with them. So yes, the plot and the way it unfolded, was very intriguing to me as the reader, but too much effort to stay with all these terrible people. So I just stopped and deleted it from my Kindle.

Well developed characters with a beautiful tie-in to modern issues.
Read while in Maui so it had competition for my attention; ha ha ha.

4.0 out of 5 stars I just finished a book that was unsettling and read like a Scorsese or Tarantino script.

3. 5 stars

It had been two years since the three siblings had last spoken, two years since the awful incident that had led their separation to grow, solidify like sunbaked mud. But, despite this, Melinda had always felt a connection with Emily she hadn’t felt with Markus, their older brother.

This was a title that was offered in the January Amazon Original selection from Kindle Unlimited.

The songwriter brother of Melinda and Emily, Markus has died and murder is suspected. The novel follows each sister as they try to bring their brother's killer to justice.

More psychological suspense than thriller, I didn't really feel hooked until halfway through the novel. There is a lot of violence in this one and so I am not sure that it will be everyone's cup of tea. After finishing it a little bit after midnight, I told my boyfriend " I just finished a book that was unsettling and read like a Scorsese or Tarantino script." Please know that is a compliment, not a criticism.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well put-together thriller, recommended.

I read this thru Amazon First Reads. It's a good tale of a brother and two sisters, relationships (familial, and personal), vigilanteeism, fame, organised crime, trauma, redemption, and surviving.

The story revolves around Marcus Pena, the famous brother of two sisters, who've previously been seriously affected by his behaviour. I did find the Latin influence of the Pena's a bit strange, as the character of Marcus seemed more African-American, than Latin; however, that's simply my take (largely based on the type of music that Marcus sings).

Anyways, Marcus has died, potentially murdered, and the two estranged sisters ultimately come together to resolve the crime, which leads to an unseen conclusion and severe consequences for many of the characters involved.

This has been one of my more enjoyable reads, this year, keeping me interested until the end, and having few downsides (plot strong, characters strong, tempo strong). I'll be reading more from this author in future.

Very well written characters, multidimensional, complex, believable - and sometimes a bit unlikable. Melinda cheating on her husband, Emily being essentially a psychopath and cold, egotistical Markus - what a lovely family. But, at the same time I liked strong female characters, refusing to be victims, taking matters in their own hands.
The book had me hooked, until the end I couldn't guess where it was going. I loved how the author described the setting of the book, I've never been to Baltimore, but i think he captured the mood, the atmosphere of it, I enjoyed all the scenes depicting the city.
Overall, it was a time well spent and I recommend this novel, you'll enjoy it.
