Admitting that "terror is a great motivator," Dickinson fought like a tigress to establish her career. Courageous and confident of her worth, she demanded $20,000 for a job when the going rate was $5,000. Bolstered by Andy Warhol's advice, "you make your own luck," Dickinson represented Hush Puppies, Max Factor and Virginia Slims and ignored Calvin Klein's comment, "models aren't supposed to think." As a result, Dickinson is more interesting than some might expect, immersing herself in details about modeling and refining her skills as a photographer. Love this woman, An honest and brave autobiography that reveals a woman with far more depth than most people imagine

Great autobiography by the World's First Supermodel (although Carol Alt and Cheryl Tiegs seem a bit older), Ms. Dickinson doesn't hold back in this autobiography that details her years of abuse at the hands of others and herself. I've always been a fan so it helped explain a lot to me, and anyone who thinks she or any of the women are lying about Cosby should read what she said in this book many years ago and see how little her story has changed. Perhaps Janice is a little over the top at times and is her worst enemy. She's still and has always been a decent, sensitive and caring person who fought her way to the top from humble origins and who stood up for the rights of others when few did and who has been treated unfairly and taken a beating in the press. Not everyone is going to like this book and they'll know it before they start reading it so they should just keep it moving. I give her props for having the courage and the guts to tell her story, knowing she would likely be taken to task or subjected to backlash from the industry and other celebrities whose shortcomings she divulges. I found the book incredibly personal and tragic at times and hysterically funny at others. I think she told her story honestly and that there are parts of her story that are probably going to help others, and I applaud her for that. She did not hold much back and did not shy away from some painful incidents in her life that many people would have tried to keep hidden. I wish there were more Janice Dickinsons around these days, we could all use a return to having a sense of humor again. Viva la Diva!,

Janice Dickinson is outrageous and so it makes sense her book is written in a no holds barred manner. It's highly entertaining--just like the woman herself--and also gives glimpses of vulnerability, a quality one senses lies just behind the tough girl exterior she cultivates. Of course, she dishes on the rich and famous and powerful. As a supermodel she rubbed elbows with many of them. Reading her words about others, however, I never felt she had an axe to grind and was being mean-spirited. She's tougher on herself than she is on anyone else in her life/book. I went back and forth "should I; shouldn't I" before purchasing "No Lifeguard on Duty." I didn't know much about Janice beyond watching her on Tyra Bank's model discovery show and faint memories of a paternity battle with Sylvester Stallone when she said her son was also his and he balked. I didn't want to read about a narcissist's "perfect, I'm so much better than you" life nor did I want to read about a "train wreck" life of drugs, alcohol, bad men and outrageous behavior. This book was a pleasant surprise b/c it was neither. Candid, yes. Funny, absolutely. Interesting, no doubt. I actually found myself applauding Janice's strength and courage revealing she does indeed have a soft side and, yes, the self-doubts we all suffer from now and then. I highly recommend the book b/c, bottom line, it's a captivating read; one I didn't want to put down.

When I bought her book I was expecting obviously some Trauma. was worse than I thought. There is a reason that she is so outrageous. I thought the book was incredibly insightful and very telling of what her experience was like.

Janice Dickinson was one of the first models who not only broke the mold of the blonde, pale and WASP-y supermodel but turned it on upside down, in the tradition of Gia Carangi, Cindy Crawford and Beverly Johnson. Born with looks that turned heads and drove men to their knees, Dickinson was not as blessed when it came to her personal life and self-image. She seemed destined to self-destruct but somehow managed to recreate herself until time, drugs and her past caught up with her.
Does this sound like just another dreary tale of a beautiful woman who let fame go to her head. drugs muddle her brain and life pass her by? Think again. Pick this one up and I doubt you'll put it down again till you've read every sentence. FOr one thing, Dickinson has the courage to spill almost all about the ups and downs of her life (although I'd LOVE to read what she doesn't reveal) and that, in itself, is compelling. She's honest about many of her flaws and revealing about the lives of celebrities who cross her path, including Sylvester Stallone, Christie Brinkley, Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty and others. This makes for a juicy read. I'll leave it to you to decide what is true and what isn't. What I CAN say is that this book definitely isn't boring or dry. CAUTION: There are some nude photos in the photo spread so, depending on your values, you may not want to leave this one lying around the house.

Janice is brave for putting this book together. She makes no attempts to soften any of the low points in her life, and that's amazing. She has led a very interesting and crazy life, and in reading more about her from her own words, I have a new found respect for what she endured and continues to endure as she goes along with her days of up and down. This book is well written, it kept my interest all the way through, and isn't too wordy like some other authors are - you know, trying to embellish with extra words... anyway, it is NOT for children to read (due to some harsh experiences and language), but it really puts the modeling world in a real light that most people in that business are not willing to talk about. Way to go, Janice! I'm glad to have read this book.

I absolutely loved this book. As someone who only became aware of Janice Dickson when she was on "I'm a Celebrity GMOH, and recently on CBB, I have to say that I find her fascinating. This book gives you an insight to her childhood and her life up to probably mid life. In the telling of her childhood its quite sad and clearly had a profound effect on her although she doesn't use it in a woe is me way. I think it allows you see that in order to survive and to get where she wanted to go it instilled in her an remarkable ethic to work and work. While reading this book I felt that I was sitting down with Janice with a glass of wine and her chatting away to you - I could nearly hear her talk to me from the pages. She does name drop A LOT! some I knew and some I had no clue who they were but you get over that. Some of the events in the book she has mentioned while on these shows but she does go into them a little more in the book. I also found the photos in the book brilliant - some she actually took herself. As she seems to be in real life she is in her writing. She had me hooked from the start and I couldn't put the book down. She had me laughing out loud at times, she pulls no punches tells it like it is. Can't wait for the next one

I choose this book because I saw her on I'm a Celebrity get me out of here and wanted to read about her and the book was on offer so I started reading it.
This is a story of her life warts and all, she wrote honestly and openly about her family life, her abusive father, her struggle to become a model, the men that came and gone in her life, the drugs and alcohol she had problems with and finally her eventual happiness she sought throughout her life and did feel. It aS really good and interesting. You see Celebrities and see them successful, but you don't often here about how hard, or the hardships they suffered to get where they are today and not as honest as Janice has been in this book. So I like her and I enjoyed reading about her in this book. I do recommend this book, although some might not approve of her life style when she started out.

I read this book yesterday !
Okay its hardly a masterpiece on epic proportions but it got me so engrossed straight away that I had to read it all in one day . I loved her on Americas Next Top Model....she made me laugh out loud , sat next to Tyra (got a rod up my ass) Banks and then in the Jungle and Come dine with me...although these shows are well after the time covered in the book.
It does cover serious issues with her abusive father 'the rat bastard' as she rightly calls him and her pill popping mother who was next to useless. I found myself really rooting for the young Janice to prove the rat bastard wrong and make something of herself. Which of course we know she does but my goodness theres a lot of things on the way that make a really good read , some that shock and some that make you feel so sorry that she had such a crappy start and the feeling that with two loving parents things would have turned out differently.
