When these men met, the sparks flew, but neither believed they could have a real relationship together. I was often annoyed with Doug's negative opinions of Vane, though I realized he was feeling guilt at the thought of moving on and looking for excuses to avoid falling for Vane. The very slow growth of their feelings, while also trying to figure out who - if anyone - was out to hurt Vane, was sweet and sometimes heartbreaking.
I loved the main and secondary characters. The mystery kept me guessing until the end, while the romance was emotional and satisfying. Vane and Doug were very much sexually compatible, and their intimate scenes were smoking hot.
This was a wonderful story, and I am more than happy to recommend it.
Vane (Ethan) (Ethan) only wanted to make up for being a disappointment to his father and to make him proud. But he leaves it to late and in finally answering a summons from his sister Rose, he is told that his father has passed away. He arrives in his Poppy Brush, having burned all of his bridges not sure what the future holds. Doug is a friend of Roses, having met Rose after both of their spouses died when Rose was getting a tarot reading from their mutual friend Dorcas. Managing a growing construction business has enabled Doug to avoid any relationships so he can’t be hurt again. Knowing that Rose is all alone with only her kids and her worthless brother Vane, Doug offers to help anyway he can. Vane (Ethan) is trying to find his way home when both the weather and his own fatigue cause him to drive into a ditch. After falling when getting out of the car and losing his keys, Vane (Ethan) is forced to try and walk somewhere so he can be rescued. After two miles of walking Vane (Ethan) stubbles into a local dive bar and who should be there but Doug drowning his sorrows. Seeing that this newcomer doesn’t have enough money, Doug buys him a beer and after hearing about his car and keys offers to help Ethan not know that this stranger is in fact Rose’s worthless brother. In a very short time Doug realizes that Ethan is more complicated than he appears. Vane(Ethan) who has no place, friends, job, career or love suddenly finds he can go back home again. And maybe just maybe he can find all of the things he didn’t know he needed and let go of the things he doesn’t need. And Doug just needs to let go and reach out. Great story, it builds at a steady pace and ends with a wow, I didn’t see that coming. Definite AAA+ plus read.
I received an advance copy of this book for an honest review.
Doug is trying to help Rose while waiting for her hapless brother to come home so is equally shocked to find he is the young man he had hooked up with.
I loved this story. There were elements of humour in amongst the sadness. The way Doug and Vane support each other, the supporting characters who all make this a very romantic thriller.
