But I am happy to report that Jason Quinn has written a fantastic introductory text! He gets straight to the point and this directness is what makes the book a gem. There is no cutting around enlightenment or telling mystifying stories about it, Jason just comes out with words pointing straight to it! The book also discusses the results of Zen practice including a natural compassion and clarity well.
I have a few problems with the book, but they're minor ones. Two concepts, emptiness and nonduality, could have been fleshed out just a little more. And there is also a quote wrongly attributed to Lao Tzu on page 55. None of this is too much of a problem, though, since this is just an introduction to Zen and I would still absolutely recommend it!
Paradoxically pointing to the experience beyond written words through written words, Mr. Quinn has illuminated the how and the why of the Path that is so very much needed today in this world, especially in this country in 2021. I hope as I’ve done, people may read this book and at least contemplate or take the first step towards discovering ever-revealing meaning in one’s short life.
